Job Description

Shaping a smarter, more agile world.

Are you ready to take up a vital role in shaping some of our exciting projects? How about joining our talented team, where everyone has a voice, and together we face our clients' problems head-on. It's a diverse and inclusive work environment where world-class talent knows no distinctions.

We know that different people have different priorities, which is why we're here to support you. Flexible and remote working is a central part of our culture. So, talk to us about what's ideal for you – from reduced weeks to buying more leave over school holidays. And if you're returning from a career break, ask us how we can help you transition back into work with us.

Join us as a Principal Maritime Safety Consultant in 'Aerospace, Defence, Security and Technology' (ADS&T) and play a pivotal role at enterprise, platform, or system level. You can be part of some of the largest, most high-profile infrastructure projects or deliver more local, niche consultancy projects. This is a role that will keep you challenged from developing innovative Safety Management solutions, to growing new areas of the business, and enabling the individuals in your division to thrive.

Role based from any ADS&T associated UK office. Some UK travel may at time be required for the role and this will be discussed at interview.

Your purpose:

  • Lead safety assurance activities across complex naval platforms, ensuring compliance with MOD and international safety standards.
  • Develop and maintain safety cases for ships and submarines, including hazard logs, risk assessments, and ALARP justifications.
  • Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams, guiding junior engineers and reviewing safety documentation.
  • Engage with stakeholders within DE&S/SDA, naval operators, and suppliers to ensure safety requirements are understood and met.
  • Support design and engineering decisions by identifying safety implications and recommending risk mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to safety management systems, ensuring continual improvement and alignment with MOD and industry best practices.
  • Deliver technical training packages on safety engineering principles, tools, and processes.
  • Manage safety engineering activities to support Platform certification by the Naval Authority Technical Group.
  • Conduct independent safety audits and assessments, providing expert advice and assurance to senior leadership.
  • Provide technical safety leadership to bids, ensuring accurate, compliant, and competitive content.

What you can bring:

Essential-

  • Maritime safety subject matter expertise with broad knowledge of Surface Ships/Submarines.
  • Knowledge of Defence Maritime Regulations.
  • Experience in safety engineering within the defence, maritime, or high-hazard industries.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience with safety tools and techniques, such as FMEA, HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis, and Bowtie analysis.
  • A proactive, analytical mindset, with the ability to spearhead, mentor, and drive safety culture across teams.
  • Experience in application of defence safety regulations (various), standards and policy, such as DSA02 DMR, IEC 61508, and JSP 815.
  • Experience with technical assurance and quality control of safety documentation.

Desirable-

Chartered Engineer status or working towards it, with a recognised professional body.
