The Role
Varo is an entirely new kind of bank. All digital, mission-driven, FDIC insured and designed for the way our customers live their lives. A bank for all of us.
We’re seeking a Principal Engineer who is passionate about building world-class, personalized experiences for our customers. You will lead a team of talented engineers, drive platform thinking, and deliver multi-platform solutions (Web, iOS, Android) that meet both technical and business goals. You thrive in fast-paced environments, think in terms of customer obsession, and have a strong bias to action. Experience in compliance and finance is a plus.
What you'll be doing
- Lead and Inspire: Guide a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Customer Obsession: Champion the customer experience, ensuring our products are intuitive, accessible, and personalized
- Platform Thinking: Architect, develop, and maintain scalable and resilient platforms that power our multi-channel solutions
- Multi-Platform Delivery: Oversee the design, development, and deployment of solutions across Web, iOS, and Android platforms
- Collaboration: Work closely with product, design, compliance, and business teams to translate requirements into technical solutions
- Ownership: Take end-to-end responsibility for the technical health, performance, and security of our products
- Compliance & Finance: Ensure solutions meet regulatory and compliance standards; leverage finance experience where applicable
- Quality at Speed: Focus on building high-quality solutions efficiently, balancing rapid delivery with robust, maintainable code and systems
You'll bring the following required skills and experiences
- 10+ years of developer experience
- Technical Expertise: Deep experience with React Native, Kotlin, and microservices architecture
- Leadership: Proven track record of leading engineering teams in fast-paced, high-growth environments
- Multi-Platform Development: Strong background in building and delivering solutions for Web, iOS, and Android
- Business Acumen: Ability to understand and translate business requirements into technical strategy
- Collaboration: Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
- Ownership & Accountability: Demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility for team and product outcomes
- Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in compliance-driven industries (e.g., finance, healthcare) & familiarity with financial services or fintech environments
