About the RoleWe’re looking for a Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership across multiple teams, influencing technical direction through expertise, collaboration and strong engineering practices.
You’ll work closely with Engineering Managers, Architects and delivery teams to drive high-impact technical initiatives, improve engineering quality and developer experience, and promote modern software engineering practices. The role has a strong focus on Continuous Delivery, automation, observability and scalable architecture.
You’ll also mentor engineers, contribute to technical strategy and help teams make better technical decisions — without relying on formal authority.
This position reports to the Engineering Manager for the Payments team, based in Budapest, Hungary.
What You'll Do- Shape technical direction and engineering roadmaps across teams
- Lead high-impact technical and platform initiatives
- Improve engineering standards, developer experience and delivery practices
- Champion CI/CD, automated testing, observability and modern engineering practices
- Design and review scalable software and cloud-native architectures
- Partner with Architecture, Engineering Managers and delivery teams
- Mentor engineers and support technical capability development
- Contribute to technical discussions, code reviews and hiring
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong experience with one or more modern languages such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Go or Java
- Deep knowledge of software design, architecture, testing and modern engineering practices
- Experience with distributed systems and cloud-native applications; AWS is preferred
- Strong understanding of APIs and communication patterns such as REST, GraphQL and gRPC
- Extensive Continuous Delivery / CI/CD experience
- Experience influencing technical direction without formal authority
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience working across global and remote teams
- A proactive mindset and passion for improving engineering practices

Skills Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent on-the-job experience
- Significant professional software engineering experience (typically 7+ years), including leading projects or technical initiatives
- Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, Java)
- Deep expertise in software engineering principles, system design, design patterns, and testing strategies
- Experience designing and evolving architectures for distributed systems and cloud-native applications
- Experience with AWS
- Strong understanding of API design and communication patterns (REST, GraphQL, gRPC) and data formats (JSON, protobuf)
- Extensive experience with Continuous Delivery/CI, automated testing, build and deployment pipelines, monitoring and alerting
- Experience working on platform-level projects servicing other engineers or teams
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and drive outcomes without formal authority
- Experience working effectively with remote teams across global locations and time zones
- Effective and confident communicator with internal and external stakeholders
- Mentoring engineers and supporting capability uplift across teams; supporting hiring and performance development
- Strong organisational and time management skills with ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment
- Self-motivated, proactive, and passionate about staying up to date with software engineering best practices
