We are seeking an accomplished Principal DevOps Engineer to provide technical leadership and hands-on engineering expertise across enterprise CI/CD and deployment automation initiatives. This role is ideal for a senior DevOps professional who can operate at both the architectural and implementation levels, solving complex deployment challenges while improving the reliability, scalability, security, and efficiency of enterprise delivery platforms.

This is a 6-month contract opportunity with the potential for extension. The successful candidate will work in a hybrid environment and is expected to be in our Toronto office three days per week.

What Will You Do?

  • Serve as a senior technical contributor for the design, development, and evolution of the Helios CI/CD pipeline supporting both VM and Mainframe platforms.
  • Drive the modernization of enterprise deployment automation by transitioning CI/CD deployment capabilities from IBM UrbanCode Deploy (UCD) to Octopus Deploy.
  • Assess existing UCD workflows, deployment configurations, and Groovy scripts to determine the most effective migration and modernization approach.
  • Re-engineer legacy deployment automation into scalable and maintainable Octopus Deploy processes and automation frameworks.
  • Design, develop, test, and optimize Octopus Deploy automation using C# and established enterprise DevOps engineering practices.
  • Establish robust validation and testing approaches for migrated pipelines to ensure reliability, security, and successful production execution.
  • Identify opportunities during the migration to eliminate technical debt, simplify deployment workflows, improve maintainability, and standardize automation.
  • Provide technical direction and engineering expertise across complex deployment and release-management initiatives.
  • Partner with application development, infrastructure, platform engineering, and release-management teams to ensure deployment solutions are production-ready.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex CI/CD, automation, deployment, and release issues across distributed and Mainframe environments.
  • Contribute to platform architecture, governance, security, RBAC, reliability, and operational standards for enterprise CI/CD capabilities.
  • Promote engineering best practices around Infrastructure as Code, Configuration as Code, automation, deployment orchestration, and release management.
  • Help establish reusable deployment patterns and technical standards that improve consistency and scalability across development teams.

What Do You Need to Succeed?

  • Minimum 7 years of development experience, with a deep understanding of DevOps principles and CI/CD best practices, including designing and implementing solutions at enterprise scale.
  • Experience migrating deployment automation from legacy DevOps platforms, preferably IBM UrbanCode Deploy (UCD), to modern deployment orchestration platforms such as Octopus Deploy.
  • Proficiency in Groovy scripting, including experience reviewing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and refactoring existing automation scripts.
  • Strong development experience with C#, with the ability to develop and optimize deployment automation within Octopus Deploy.
  • Experience designing, testing, validating, and implementing production-ready release automation solutions.
  • Deep understanding of DevOps principles, Infrastructure as Code, deployment orchestration, CI/CD, and release-management best practices.
  • Strong understanding of Configuration as Code, RBAC, and integration with Mainframe environments from modern deployment platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with DevOps tools and platforms including:
Jenkins, IBM UrbanCode Deploy (UCD), GitHub, GitHub Actions, JFrog Artifactory, HashiCorp Vault, Ansible, and Octopus Deploy.
  • Proficiency with Java, Python, TypeScript, Groovy, YAML, and NPM.
  • Experience deploying applications and workloads to cloud and container platforms including OCP, Azure, and AWS.
  • High proficiency with IBM Developer for z/OS (IDz).
  • Experience working with Mainframe technologies and utilities including ISPF, TSO, Mainframe file systems, JES, and Endevor.
  • Ability to operate as a senior hands-on engineer while providing technical guidance and influencing engineering standards across teams.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

We offer a competitive hourly rate, a collaborative and casual work environment, and the opportunity to work with talented professionals on a significant enterprise DevOps modernization initiative.

If you are a seasoned DevOps engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, modernizing enterprise deployment platforms, and shaping scalable CI/CD practices, we encourage you to apply.
