The Role

WHY VEIR?

VEIR is enabling a new generation of compact, efficient, high-power, and long-distance power delivery solutions, solving bottlenecks that exist across the entire electricity value chain, from generation through to data center server racks. VEIR's low voltage superconducting solutions are enabling new power delivery architectures in the world’s largest data centers and our higher voltage solutions are poised to revolutionize the development of electricity transmission and distribution linesVEIR is preparing for rapid growth as we seek to solve critical challenges facing data center developers, electricity generation developers, and utilities around the world.

The Role

VEIR is seeking a Principal Cryogenic Systems Engineer to serve as a deep technical expert responsible for the design, analysis, and performance of VEIR’s cryogenic cooling systems. This role is focused on hands-on engineering execution and technical problem-solving across development, testing, and early deployments of VEIR’s HTS cable systems.

As a Principal Engineer, you will be the go-to expert for cryogenic system behavior and performance, owning complex technical problems from concept through validation. You will work closely with system integration, heat transfer, superconducting systems, electrical, and controls engineers to ensure cryogenic designs meet demanding thermal, reliability, and operational requirements in real-world environments.

This role emphasizes technical depth, rigor, and execution rather than people or organizational leadership.

What You'll Do

  • Design and analyze cryogenic cooling systems supporting VEIR’s HTS cable platforms
  • Perform detailed thermal, fluid, and system-level analyses to predict performance under normal and fault conditions
  • Develop and validate cryogenic system models, simulations, and calculations to inform design decisions
  • Specify and integrate cryogenic components including:
    • Cryocoolers and refrigeration systems
    • Liquid nitrogen distribution and piping
    • Vacuum-insulated and thermally insulated components
    • Sensors, instrumentation, and safety devices
  • Support hands-on build, test, commissioning, and troubleshooting of cryogenic systems in lab and pilot environments
  • Diagnose and resolve complex cryogenic performance issues, failures, and anomalies
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical documentation, risk assessments, and safety analyses
  • Work closely with cross-functional engineers to ensure cryogenic designs integrate cleanly with electrical, mechanical, and control systems
  • Support supplier technical evaluations and component qualification from an engineering perspective

What Success Looks Like

First 3 Months
  • Develop a deep understanding of VEIR’s HTS platforms, cryogenic architectures, and system requirements
  • Become fluent in VEIR’s existing cryogenic designs, models, test data, and known technical risks
  • Contribute immediately to ongoing cryogenic analyses, design reviews, and technical problem-solving
  • Build strong working relationships with system integration, heat transfer, superconducting systems, and controls engineers
  • Identify near-term opportunities to improve cryogenic system performance, reliability, or test efficiency
First 6 Months
  • Independently own complex cryogenic analyses and design decisions for key subsystems
  • Deliver validated thermal, fluid, or system-level models that directly influence hardware design choices
  • Support hands-on testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of cryogenic systems in lab or pilot environments
  • Resolve one or more significant cryogenic performance or reliability challenges through data-driven engineering
  • Contribute to technical documentation, safety analyses, and design-for-scalability considerations
At the end of your first year
  • Be recognized internally as the subject-matter expert for cryogenic system behavior and performance
  • Drive measurable improvements in cryogenic efficiency, reliability, or operational stability across VEIR platforms
  • Support cryogenic designs that are ready for pilot deployments or early commercial use
  • Provide technical guidance and review on cryogenic-related decisions across projects without formal management responsibility
  • Help reduce technical risk by identifying failure modes early and validating solutions through modeling and testing

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Physics, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • 12+ years of experience designing, analyzing, and testing cryogenic or low-temperature systems
  • Strong fundamentals in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and cryogenic fluid behavior (especially liquid nitrogen)
  • Hands-on experience with cryogenic refrigeration, vacuum systems, insulation strategies, and piping design
  • Proven ability to independently solve complex, ambiguous technical problems
  • Experience validating designs through testing and data-driven analysis
  • Familiarity with cryogenic safety practices, standards, and hazard analysis
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, hardware-focused development environments
  • Experience supporting systems transitioning from prototype to early field deployment
  • Experience operating cryogenic systems outside controlled laboratory settings
  • Familiarity with industrial controls, instrumentation, or data acquisition systems
  • (Preferred) Experience with cryogenic systems supporting superconducting or high-power electrical applications
