The Role

Summary:

As part of the Site Operations organization, the Principal Automation Engineer is a member of the Site Automation team that provides technical support to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable operation of automation systems owned and supported by Site Services at Genentech’s South San Francisco and Dixon sites. This role is part of a team that is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of critical building automation (BAS) infrastructure for a portfolio of 50+ buildings and ~6 million square feet of space.  This role also provides strategic input in the design & planning of campus automation systems, leads communications with key customers and cross-functional partners, and directly supports capital projects, business initiatives, process improvements and regulatory inspections. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong expertise in Siemens Desigo CC, BacNet, and Aveeva PI.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as Technical System Owner (TSO) for a wide range of building automation platforms, process control systems and system applications. This includes BAS (Siemens Desigo CC), data historian (Aveeva Pi), server infrastructure and other GMP assets. 

  • Customer Support: Work closely with Site Operations customers to proactively identify and address customer needs and provide essential system support in a 24x7 environment. (SSF & Dixon)

    • Identify and resolve hardware and software application issues; manage change control.

    • Manage and maintain server infrastructure including system patching, upgrade, backup, operating procedures, and system manuals. 

  • Technical leader who influences cross-functional teams on

    • Long-term objectives and key strategic initiatives specific to Building Automation Systems 

    • Next generation automation technologies.

  • Establish work priorities and timelines under limited supervision. 

  • Developing and managing vendor-partner relationships, support contracts, vendor resources 

  • Act as a mentor to develop peers and junior engineers.

Who You Are:

  • 10+ years of experience designing and supporting automation platforms in critical operations environments. Experience in a pharmaceutical or manufacturing environment is required.

  • Excellent customer service, informal leadership skills.

  • Effective at managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

  • Experience working with systems integrators in the design and build of control systems.

  • Hands-on technical experience in the following areas is required:

    • Strong experience with Siemens Desigo CC

    • Networking: BACnet, Modbus & OPC protocols, BBMD configuration. 

    • Aveeva PI Historian, Asset Framework (PI AF)

    • Windows server management, database technologies, active directory & group policies with respect to Operational Technologies (OT). 

  • Experience in the following areas is a plus:

    • Siemens ABT, Schneider Structureware and ALC WebCTRL.

    • IIS Web Application Configuration

Education / Certification

  • Bachelor's or Masters in Engineering such as Computer Science, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or equivalent preferred.

  • Continuous Improvement methodologies such as LEAN/Six Sigma.

  • System-specific certifications are a plus.

  • Good understanding of cGMP regulations and Good Engineering Practices (GEP).  

Relocation benefits are not available for this posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $138,500 - $257,100 USD Annual.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
