Role Summary

Ehvert Mission Critical, a business unit within Salas O'Brien, is seeking a highly experienced Power Studies Engineer to join our team and support the analysis and design of complex electrical power systems for hyperscale and AI data centers across Canada and North America. This is a remote role within an innovative, international engineering firm recognized for its cutting-edge work in mission-critical infrastructure.

As a Power Studies Engineer, you will play a key role in evaluating electrical system performance, reliability, and resiliency through advanced power system studies and modeling. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, utility providers, and project stakeholders to develop solutions for high-density AI and mission-critical facilities where system reliability and uptime are paramount.

What You Will Do

  • Perform power system studies including load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, grounding, power quality, harmonic analysis, transient analysis, and reliability studies.
  • Develop and maintain electrical system models using PSCAD, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or similar software platforms.
  • Perform electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies to evaluate system behavior during switching events, faults, utility disturbances, and large load changes.
  • Analyze the impact of high-density AI loads and other mission-critical electrical loads on utility systems, emergency generation, UPS systems, and facility electrical infrastructure.
  • Support utility interconnection studies and coordinate with utility providers regarding service requirements and system performance.
  • Evaluate system reliability, redundancy strategies, contingency scenarios, and overall power system resiliency.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, study documentation, and engineering recommendations.
  • Collaborate with electrical design teams on medium-voltage systems, substations, standby generation, UPS systems, mechanical system electrical load characteristics, and utility service infrastructure.
  • Participate in design coordination meetings with clients, consultants, utility providers, and project stakeholders.
  • Support commissioning activities and provide technical expertise during project execution.
  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable industry standards.

What We Expect

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 8–15 years of experience in power systems engineering, utility engineering, substations, transmission and distribution, industrial facilities, renewable energy, mining, or mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience performing power system studies, including transient, harmonic, grounding, load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, and arc flash analysis.
  • Proficiency with PSCAD is required.
  • Experience with ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, CYME, or similar power system analysis software.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems, utility infrastructure, substations, protective relaying, and system reliability.
  • Experience with utility interconnections and medium-voltage power systems.
  • Experience performing underground duct bank ampacity and heat studies (Neher-McGrath methodology) is considered an asset.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligibility to obtain registration, is considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA standards, IEEE standards, utility requirements, and applicable provincial electrical regulations. Familiarity with U.S. codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE) is considered an asset.
  • Excellent technical writing, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical findings and recommendations to clients.
  • Experience supporting data center, utility, industrial, or other large-scale infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
