Overview of Job Function:
We are seeking a proactive and skilled PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA) with a strong focus on automation and operational excellence to join our Database Operations team. This role is responsible for managing and supporting PostgreSQL database environments, ensuring availability, performance, security, reliability, and scalability across business-critical systems.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in PostgreSQL administration, database automation, backup and recovery, High Availability/Disaster Recovery (HA/DR), cloud database operations, and production support. Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server environments is desirable as a secondary skill.
This position is well suited for someone who enjoys troubleshooting complex database issues, building automation solutions, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Database Administration & Operations
- Install, configure, upgrade, maintain, and monitor PostgreSQL database environments to ensure database health, availability, and performance in AWS RDS setup
- Manage routine database administration activities, including health checks, maintenance tasks, vacuum monitoring, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
- Administer database backup, restore, and recovery processes to support business continuity requirements.
- Support and maintain High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) solutions using PostgreSQL technologies such as Streaming Replication, Patroni, Pgpool-II, or similar solutions. Exposure to Multi-AZ cluster on AWS.
- Identify and resolve database performance bottlenecks through proactive monitoring and analysis.
- Monitor database performance metrics and implement recommendations to enhance overall system performance.
- Support database deployments, upgrades, migrations, and patching activities.
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring issues.
- Provide operational support for PostgreSQL databases hosted on AWS RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, or other cloud platforms.
Automation & Continuous Improvement (Primary Focus)
- Automate routine DBA activities to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual effort.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using Python, Shell Scripting, Ansible, PowerShell, or similar automation tools.
- Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, maintenance, backup, and operational automation solutions.
- Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and database standardization initiatives.
- Support CI/CD implementation and automated database deployment processes.
- Identify opportunities to optimize operational processes through automation and self-healing mechanisms.
- Assist with database modernization efforts and platform enhancement initiatives.
Security, Compliance & Governance
- Administer database security, user access management, roles, and permissions.
- Support database auditing, compliance requirements, and security best practices.
- Ensure database environments align with organizational standards, governance policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in vulnerability remediation and security reviews.
Secondary Database Support (MSSQL)
- Provide administration and operational support for Microsoft SQL Server environments as needed.
- Support MSSQL backup and recovery, database migrations, performance troubleshooting, and HA/DR solutions.
- Assist in maintaining SQL Server security, auditing, and compliance requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3-4 years of experience in PostgreSQL Database Administration.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL 13/14/15/16 administration and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL performance tuning and query optimization.
- Experience with Backup & Recovery, database migrations, and HA/DR solutions.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL replication technologies and disaster recovery strategies.
- Hands-on experience with cloud database platforms such as AWS RDS PostgreSQL and Aurora PostgreSQL.
- Strong scripting and automation experience using Python, Shell Scripting, Ansible, PowerShell, or similar tools.
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, pgAdmin, Datadog, OEM, or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Linux administration and database infrastructure management.
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2019/2022 administration.
- Understanding of DevOps concepts and CI/CD processes for database deployments.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, etc.).
- Experience with ticketing and service management tools such as ServiceNow or Jira.
- Understanding of ITIL processes and operational best practices.
- PostgreSQL certifications (EDB, PostgreSQL Professional Certification, or equivalent) preferred.
- Exposure to containerized environments such as Docker and Kubernetes is a plus.
