About the Biology Department and Research Lab

The Haverford College Biology Department supports modern core facilities that foster active research by students, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty, and are supported by internal, governmental, and private foundation funding.  The Jain lab is supported by an active National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant and features a collaborative atmosphere of mutual support and learning.  The Principal Investigator (PI) takes an active direct role in mentoring research associates on research techniques, scientific communication, and scientific writing for publication.

About the Position
The Research Associate will pursue independent research investigating genetic, molecular, developmental, and cellular regulation of behavior using zebrafish in the lab of Dr. Roshan Jain.  Additional responsibilities of this position include maintenance of lab zebrafish stocks and databases and collaboration with student researchers. The position will also feature mentored support for collaborative science writing and communication. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing projects leading to research manuscripts for peer review and publication. There will be opportunities for co-mentorship and supervision of undergraduate student research, authorship on research publications, travel to scientific conferences, and scientific presentations. This position would be an excellent opportunity for a recently-graduated or Spring 2025 graduating undergraduate interested in a biomedical and/or research career path.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Carry out mentored independent research in the neurobiology of simple behaviors using zebrafish
  • Help manage and maintain Jain lab databases, reagents, and data
  • Communicate the work of the Jain lab through manuscripts, talks, and posters
  • Support and mentor undergraduate researchers in the Jain lab with their research
  • Breed and generate mutant and transgenic zebrafish lines
  • Assist in maintenance of the Jain Lab zebrafish facility

Line of Report: The Post-baccalaureate Research Associate will report to Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Roshan Jain. This position does not have direct reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in areas of Biology, Neuroscience, Chemistry or related life sciences fields, completed prior to position start date
  • Prior experience with common molecular biology lab techniques and independent lab research experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with coding or computational work
  • Zebrafish husbandry, and/or vertebrate animal research
