SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for helping licensed pharmacists provide medication and other health care products to patients.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Complies with applicable board of pharmacy requirements, state and federal laws.
  • Prepares prescriptions for dispensing by the pharmacist by retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing, and at times mixing medication.
  • Makes requisitions for drugs and supplies with professional guidance from the pharmacists.
  • Orders, receives, and maintains inventory of drugs and chemicals, and ensures their security.
  • Verifies that information on the prescription is complete and accurate.
  • Enters data in computer system, recording all the prescriptions, purchase orders, requisitions, and disbursements.
  • Performs general clerical duties, such as answering phones, operating cash register, etc as needed.
  • Maintain patient records confidentiality.
  • Maintain professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.
  • Attends in-service and training as assigned.
  • Performs specific work duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY

  • Must have effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office applications and able to learn other computer software required.
  • Capable of maintaining a neat and organized work space.
  • Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively
  • Must display a courteous, friendly and helpful customer-service oriented attitude toward the public.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Maintain a current Pharmacy Technician license and PTCB certification and be in good standing.
  • Maintain all continuing education required by State.

PERSONAL AND PUBLIC CONTACT

The Pharmacy Technician will have personal contact with all levels of staff, patients, visitors, and government agencies.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS

The Pharmacy Technician must be able to lift up to and over 20 lbs. The position requires bending, stooping, crouching, walking, pushing and pulling and long periods of standing. The physical demands of the position are frequently extreme and require the highest level of concern for personal and patient safety. Exposure to chemical is possible. Hearing, speech and vision must be adequate to perform job duties in person and over the phone. Have the ability to tolerate moderate to high stress levels and work closely with others.

EQUIPMENT USED

The Pharmacy Technician will use the following equipment: various medical equipment utilized in the care of customers, computer and various computer programs, copy machine, fax machine and telephone usage.

OSHA TASK CATEGORY III

Tasks that involve little or no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

COMPLIANCE

Responsible for abiding by all policies and procedures to include the Code of Ethics and the principles and standards set forth for conducting business and affairs.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)

The Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for abiding by all policies and procedures relating to HIPAA.

Skills Required

  • Current Pharmacy Technician license
  • PTCB certification and good standing
  • Maintain state-required continuing education

  • Ability to learn and use pharmacy computer software
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
