Position SummaryPagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking an experienced PRN Staff Pharmacist to join our Pharmacy team on an as-needed basis.
The Staff Pharmacist supports the safe and effective procurement, receipt, storage, preparation, distribution, and use of medications throughout the organization. Responsibilities include medication order verification, clinical medication management, drug interaction and laboratory review, IV preparation, Pyxis management, medication distribution, and supervision of pharmacy technician work.
This position requires hospital pharmacy experience and oncology infusion experience and works closely with physicians, nurses, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure medication therapy is accurate, appropriate, timely, and compliant with state and federal requirements.

- Review and verify medication orders, including oncology infusion orders
- Evaluate medication therapy for appropriate drug selection, dosing, indications, interactions, contraindications, and patient-specific considerations
- Review patient profiles, laboratory results, and clinical information to identify and prevent medication-related problems
- Identify potential adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, inappropriate dosing, untreated indications, therapeutic failures, and other medication-related concerns
- Provide accurate, safe, timely, and appropriate medication therapy based on patient age and disease state
- Communicate with physicians, nurses, and other providers to clarify medication orders and resolve clinical concerns
- Provide medication information and clinical pharmacy support to providers and nursing staff
- Review and verify medication orders for oncology infusions
- Safely handle, store, prepare, and distribute hazardous medications
- Follow appropriate clean room procedures, including proper gowning and garbing
- Utilize proper aseptic technique during parenteral compounding
- Prepare hazardous and non-hazardous medications using Laminar Airflow Workbenches and Biological Safety Cabinets
- Maintain required pharmacy cleaning and temperature logs
- Perform applicable quality control functions
- Participate in central dispensing and pharmacy operational programs
- Order and receive medications appropriately
- Perform medication distribution activities accurately
- Repackage bulk medications as needed
- Perform unit-dose and THP packaging and generate appropriate barcoding
- Maintain required pharmacy and regulatory records
- Perform audits in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements
- Support pharmacy inventory and medication-management processes
- Maintain continuing education and active licensure requirements established by the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy
- Manage and maintain Pyxis MedStation automated dispensing systems
- Perform daily and on-demand Pyxis refills
- Load and unload medications and adjust medication par levels
- Maintain Pyxis ADC medication scanning databases
- Add, edit, and remove medications and users as appropriate
- Assign user roles as directed
- Investigate and resolve Pyxis discrepancies in a timely manner
- Supervise pharmacy technician work
- Provide appropriate direction and oversight of technician activities
- Promote safe and accurate medication preparation and distribution practices
- Maintain accountability for Pharmacy standards, policies, procedures, training, certifications, and regulatory requirements
- Support a collaborative, respectful, and professional Pharmacy environment
- Maintain records in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Follow applicable federal and Colorado laws governing pharmacy practice
- Perform required regulatory audits and quality control activities
- Maintain safe practices for handling hazardous medications, including chemotherapeutic agents
- Maintain medication storage, cleaning, and temperature requirements
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with PSMC policies and procedures
- Participate in departmental inventory processes and organizational safety initiatives
- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Pharmacy required
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) desired but not required
- PGY1 Pharmacy Residency desired but not required
- Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) credential desired but not required
- Minimum of two (2) years of hospital pharmacist experience required
- Oncology infusion experience required
- Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to pharmacy practice required
- Current, active pharmacist license through the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy required
- Current AHA BLS HeartSaver certification required
- Continuing education and active licensure must be maintained in accordance with Colorado State Board of Pharmacy requirements Pharmacist_ Staff
- Computer proficiency sufficient to utilize email, documents, spreadsheets, and project management software
- Electronic health record experience desired
- Must develop a strong working knowledge of Cerner
- Ability to maintain proficiency with hospital medication-ordering and pharmacy computer systems
- Experience with automated dispensing systems such as Pyxis is highly valuable for this role

This is a PRN position, with hours scheduled as needed based on Pharmacy coverage and operational needs.
Work is performed in a hospital setting with frequent interruptions and regular interaction with patients, employees, providers, vendors, and other members of the healthcare team. The position may involve exposure to blood and bodily fluids, communicable diseases, radiation, chemicals, hazardous materials, toxic chemotherapeutic agents, sharp instruments, and pharmacy equipment.
The position is classified as Medium Work and includes standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, fine manipulation, keyboarding, and other physical activities associated with hospital pharmacy operations.
Compensation & Benefits- Base Compensation Range: $53.57 - $66.97 hourly
- PRN Differential Pay: +$5.00 per hour
