Summary Description: 

The CORE Generalist provides person-centered, recovery-oriented services to individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) in accordance with New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) CORE service guidelines. This role integrates lived experience–informed peer support with structured psychosocial rehabilitation interventions to assist individuals in achieving personal recovery goals, improving functional skills, and increasing community integration. The CORE Generalist works collaboratively with the individual, interdisciplinary team, and community providers to promote hope, self-determination, skill development, and sustained recovery.


Responsibilities: 


  • Utilize personal lived experience with mental health recovery, where appropriate, to inspire hope and model recovery.
  • Assist individuals in identifying strengths, goals, and personal recovery pathways.
  • Promote engagement in services and assist individuals in navigating systems of care.
  • Encourage shared decision-making and self-direction.
  • Deliver structured, goal-oriented interventions to improve daily living, social, and vocational skills.
  • Assist individuals in developing skills related to independent living (e.g., budgeting, hygiene, time management).
  • Support community integration through skill-building activities in real-world settings.
  • Provide coaching in interpersonal effectiveness, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Assist with educational and vocational readiness, including referrals and coordination.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and OMH-compliant documentation 
  • Develop and update individualized service plans in collaboration with the individual and treatment team.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and case conferences.
  • Coordinate care with mental health providers, primary care, social services, and community supports.
  • Advocate for individuals’ needs within systems of care.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while fostering authentic peer relationships.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): 

  • Measure improvements in client’s skills and independence.
  • Measure success in assisting clients with their recovery goals.
  • Assess client outcomes and satisfaction with these services.
  • Timely and accurate documentation in accordance with GMH documentation policy.
  • Ensure that all direct-service productivity expectations are met.

 

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent plus 3 years of relevant experience working with individuals with behavioral health conditions and/or SUD disorders;
  • Or must have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, AND
  • Must have a New York Certified Peer Specialist certification or provisional certification (NYCPS, NYCPS-P)
  • Must have lived experience with mental health recovery.
  • Must be reliable and able to work independently and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and a driving record that is satisfactory to our insurance carrier, and must maintain current New York State Defensive Driving certification.
  • Strong computer knowledge: typing, communication tools, scheduling tools and web browsers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and database management systems.
  • Proficiency in English includes skills in reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Must be cleared and maintain clearance by applicable regulatory clearances as required.  
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

 


Special Considerations

  • A flexible schedule is a plus, as some services may be delivered during evenings or other non-traditional hours to best support individuals.
  • Hours per week, reporting structure, and location are subject to change per program needs.



 

 

Mandated Reporter:

This is a Mandated Reporter position. The NYS Justice Center legislation defines anyone who has regular and substantial contact with any person with special needs as a “custodian” under the law and, therefore, a mandated reporter. You can be held liable by both the civil and criminal legal systems for intentionally failing to make a report.

Skills Required
