The Payroll & Benefits Specialist plays an important role in the employee experience by ensuring payroll, benefits, and leave processes are executed with accuracy, efficiency, and care. This position helps the organization maintain compliance, operational excellence, and scalability while providing dependable support to employees and managers.
We are seeking a detail-oriented and employee-focused Payroll & Benefits Specialist to support the day-to-day execution of payroll, benefits, and leave administration. Reporting to the Payroll & Benefits Director, this role is ideal for an experienced, dependable professional who values accurate and consistent execution, enjoys hands-on operational work, and provides exceptional employee service while helping drive operational excellence across the Total Rewards function.
Key Responsibilities
- Process multi-state payroll and support end-to-end payroll activities ensuring accuracy, compliance, and on-time delivery.
- Support weekly union payroll administration and related payroll requirements.
- Administer employee leave programs, including FMLA and applicable state leave requirements.
- Administer employee benefits, enrollments, life events, and Open Enrollment activities.
- Partner with employees, managers, HR, and vendors to resolve payroll, benefits, and leave questions.
- Maintain procedures, documentation, reconciliations, and established operational controls.
- Support periodic Total Rewards activities, including compensation data uploads, audits, reporting, and other administrative processes as needed.
- 3 to 5 years of payroll, benefits, or Total Rewards operations experience, including hands-on multi-state payroll responsibility.
- Knowledge of benefits contract language, and ability to evaluate and make judgment on RFPs
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including the ability to analyze and reconcile payroll and employee data.
- Experience working with HRIS, payroll, and and/or benefits systems.
- Excellent communication, time management, customer service, and confidentiality practices with ability to manage external relationships.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks and projects while working under pressure to meet deadlines
Preferred
- Workday Payroll and/or Benefits experience.
- Benefits or Payroll certifications such as CEBS, FPC or CPP.
- Experience supporting 1,000+ employees across multiple states.
- Working knowledge of applicable payroll and benefits requirements (e.g., ACA, COBRA, ERISA).
- Experience working in a SOX-controlled environment.
- Experience supporting union payroll.
- HR or Benefits certifications including CEBS, PHR, or SPHR.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus
