About the role

This is an opportunity to build strong payroll foundations in a supportive, close-knit team. You will join our Melbourne-based Payroll team, part of the broader Finance function, and support the accurate and timely delivery of payroll across Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.

You will work closely with a Payroll Coordinator, supported by a Payroll Manager and Payroll Officer. You will focus on several smaller pay groups and play a key role in ensuring each payroll cycle is delivered with care and consistency.

Payroll at Nous is detailed, people-critical work. Accuracy matters. While we are investing in system improvements and automation, our current environment relies on well-defined manual processes, reconciliations and quality checks. You will need to be comfortable working independently, using written guidance and building your capability through hands-on experience. You will also need to interpret guidance, apply payroll rules in practice and identify opportunities to improve processes over time.

This role suits someone who enjoys structured, process-driven work and takes pride in getting the details right. will not be expected to know everything from day one, but you will have the opportunity to take ownership of your learning and build confidence over time.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver accurate and timely payroll across monthly and fortnightly cycles
  • Manage new starters and employee changes, ensuring payroll data is correct and up to date
  • Validate payroll inputs and support careful manual processing
  • Reconcile payroll outputs, including timesheets, to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Respond to payroll and employee queries with clarity and professionalism
  • Support payroll reporting and day-to-day administration
  • Contribute to a team focused on consistency, quality and continuous improvement

What will help you succeed

  • 1–2 years of payroll experience and a solid understanding of Australian payroll fundamentals
  • Confidence working with structured and manual payroll processes
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
  • Intermediate Excel skills
  • Experience with Micropay, Sage People or similar systems (helpful but not essential)
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work with a range of stakeholders
  • Strong time management and the ability to prioritise routine work
  • Ability to learn from written guidance and apply it in practice
  • Strong interpretation skills and attention to detail when working with policies, guidance and payroll rules
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt when working within structured, process-driven environments
  • A proactive approach to learning and improving ways of working
