THE OPPORTUNITY
ActBlue seeks a savvy Partner, Internal Communications to assist in the strategic development and execution of comprehensive internal communications programming for our organization of 300 distributed employees. This role serves as both a strategic thinker and hands-on producer, developing communications strategy while managing day-to-day content creation and channel operations that drive organizational alignment, culture development, and employee engagement. We are looking for a storyteller, trusted advisor, and skilled communicator who connects distributed employees to organizational strategy.
This position requires exceptional strategic judgment combined with outstanding execution capabilities. Working with all levels of the organization, you will develop frameworks and guidance for organizational communications while personally producing high-impact content including executive messages, all-staff meeting materials, and the internal newsletter. As a recognized subject matter expert, you will advise (not just partner with) leadership on internal communications strategy, providing counsel on sensitive organizational matters and contributing strategic perspective to organizational decision-making.
This role requires executive presence and the ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision, managing stakeholder relationships across 15+ partners including C-suite executives, department heads, ERG leaders, and cross-functional teams. You will balance strategic planning with hands-on production, understanding how communications systematically impacts employee engagement, organizational culture, and business effectiveness across multiple functions. This is an opportunity to help build a truly impactful internal communications program that intends to inspire, inform, and engage our employees.
You will report to the Director of Internal Communications and Research and work in close partnership with the VP of Communications, External Affairs, and Marketing (CEAM); People & Culture; the Chief of Staff; and department heads across ActBlue
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Develop and contribute to ActBlue's comprehensive internal communications strategy, creating frameworks, templates, and guidance that enable consistent, effective communications practices organization-wide while ensuring communication considerations are integrated into organizational decision-making processes
- Lead both strategic content development and hands-on production, balancing high-level planning with day-to-day execution including writing, editing, and publishing across all internal channels (Slack, email, Confluence)
- Own production and strategic direction of ActBlue's internal newsletter, managing content strategy, editorial calendar, and ensuring content better engages, informs, and inspires staff while raising awareness of organizational objectives
- Manage day-to-day operations of all internal communication channels, establishing and maintaining editorial calendars, style guidelines, and quality standards
- Lead content development for quarterly virtual All-Staff Meetings (200+ attendees), working with the Director of Internal Communications and Research to translate strategic objectives into compelling programming that drives employee engagement
- Own 25% of content creation for annual in-person All-Staff Retreats, producing programming elements that strengthen organizational culture and connection across the distributed workforce
- Prepare Executive Leadership Team members for internal communications events and presentations, providing strategic counsel and messaging guidance
- Serve as subject matter expert on internal communications best practices to executive leadership and department heads. Build and maintain strategic stakeholder relationships across the organization, managing up effectively by providing solutions-oriented recommendations and maintaining trust
- Support change management communications, working closely with People & Culture to ensure organizational changes are communicated effectively across the workforce
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in all communications, working closely with DEI leadership to ensure inclusive messaging, authentic representation of lived experiences, and accessibility considerations for remote and distributed staff across all demographics
- Establish and monitor communication effectiveness metrics, using data to continuously improve content strategy and demonstrate impact of internal communications
WHAT YOU BRING
- 6-8 years of progressive communications experience with demonstrated success developing and executing large-scale internal communication programs in organizations of 150+ employees, preferably in nonprofit, advocacy, and/or technology organizations. Dedicated internal communications experience is required.
- Proven track record of serving as a strategic advisor to senior executives, contributing meaningfully to leadership decision-making and providing counsel on sensitive communication matters with a high level of empathy and strong judgement
- Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on production, developing frameworks and guidance while personally executing high-quality content creation across multiple channels simultaneously
- Systems-level understanding of how communications impacts employee engagement, organizational culture, and business effectiveness, with ability to articulate strategic value and influence organizational direction
- Exceptional writing and content development skills with portfolio demonstrating ability to craft compelling, strategic communications for diverse audiences and sensitive organizational topics
- Proven success managing up and working autonomously with minimal supervision, proactively anticipating leadership needs, providing solutions-oriented recommendations, and maintaining trust during challenging situations
- Executive presence and high judgment – ability to maintain professionalism and deliver strategic value during high-stakes communications situations requiring discretion and political acumen
- Cultural competency and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in communication practices, with experience creating inclusive content that authentically represents diverse lived experiences and perspectives
- Ability to work effectively across multiple time zones and collaborate with distributed teams
