You will be the Opto‑Mechanical Engineer for the Hardware Engineering team at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC). Our team delivers precision engagement aerospace and defense systems, designing, building and fielding the electrical hardware that powers missiles, sensors and other mission critical subsystems for the United States and allied militaries.
What You Will Be Doing
As the Opto‑Mechanical Engineer you will drive the full life‑cycle of optical hardware, from research and concept through detailed design, supplier documentation, fabrication, and test. You’ll partner with optical designers, mechanical engineers, manufacturers, and test teams to ensure every component stays aligned, functional, and compliant with stringent performance and environmental specifications. Your responsibilities will include:
- Researching, planning, and defining optical element requirements (lenses, filters, beamsplitters, diffractive optics, etc.).
- Designing mechanical structures, assemblies, mechanisms, and fixtures that securely hold and accurately align optical components within system tolerance budgets.
- Selecting materials based on optical alignment tolerances, manufacturing capabilities, environmental exposure, and ergonomic considerations.
- Developing precision components and kinematic mechanisms that maintain alignment through vibration, shock, temperature, and humidity extremes.
- Creating complete design‑documentation packages for suppliers, including optical drawings, mechanical drawings, specifications, tolerances, and special process steps.
- Generating system‑level requirements, performance budgets, build and test procedures, verification plans, and operating manuals.
- Performing finite‑element and tolerance analyses to predict alignment drift and ensure compliance with performance targets.
- Conducting prototype build‑up, integration, and functional testing; documenting results and iterating designs as needed.
- Collaborating with manufacturing partners to resolve producibility issues and to qualify processes for high‑volume production.
- Providing technical support during Design Assurance reviews, change‑board meetings, and customer briefings.
- Mentoring junior engineers and fostering an inclusive, collaborative design culture.
