Optical Test & Controls Engineer – Independent Contractor
AstronetX is seeking an independent contractor to provide part‑time optical test & controls engineering services in support of our environmental test campaign for our Lunar-based Camera (L-CAM). This contract engagement spans approximately 6 months, with flexibility to begin as early as Q4 2026, and focuses on operating optical instrumentation, executing environmental tests, and writing and operating Linux‑based camera control software.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to a lunar mission and to work hands‑on with advanced optical hardware in both laboratory and environmental test environments. New graduates are welcome to apply if they have relevant academic or research experience.
The contractor will work independently in a remote setting, with periodic on-site availability at test locations in Westford, MA and Danbury, CT. Approximately 25% travel should be expected, varying based on candidate location and test campaign schedule.
Qualifications:
Strong candidates will have:
- Experience with optical or electro‑optical system testing, preferably in a research or engineering setting.
- Familiarity with Linux environments, command‑line tools, and scripting for hardware control.
- Experience interacting and controlling laboratory hardware such as cameras, optical setups, motion control mechanisms.
- Ability to develop and follow detailed test procedures and document results with precision.
- Comfortable working in a hybrid environment, collaborating remotely with a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting, with periodic on-site availability in Westford, MA and Danbury, CT.
- Availability to provide approximately 10–20 hours per week on a contract basis.
Exceptional candidates will also have:
- Experience supporting thermal‑vacuum and vibration test campaigns.
- Experience with camera systems, detector characterization, or telescope hardware.
- Background in software tools for instrument control.
- Experience in space hardware development or operation.
- Knowledge of controls, feedback systems, or precision positioning equipment.
Scope of Work:
- Providing technical leadership on a test campaign validating prototype hardware in representative environments.
- Designing and implementing routines required for critical functions within the command-and-control software to support benchtop and environmental testing at the subsystem and system level.
- Running Linux‑based control software and command‑line tools to operate cameras and related hardware.
- Monitoring test data, collecting logs, and helping identify anomalies or hardware behavior trends.
- Supporting optical system setups, alignment checks, and verification procedures prior to environmental runs.
- Coordinating with AstronetX systems, mechanical, and optical engineers to ensure test objectives are met.
- Maintaining clear documentation of test execution, system configuration, and test results.
- Providing on‑site support during test windows at external partner facilities in Westford, MA and Danbury, CT.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry test equipment up to 20 pounds.
Hourly Contract Rate
Hourly contract rate range between $130–$150 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
