Job Description

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) team is seeking an engineer to support the WAAS National Airway Subsystem. WAAS is a satellite navigation aid developed by the FAA to augment the Global Positioning System (GPS), with the goal of improving its accuracy, integrity, and availability. The position supports the WAAS team with the corrections and integrity verification of the GPS signal.

The WAAS networking infrastructure is transitioning from a private TDM network to an IP Network shared with other National Airways Systems. Further, the operating system is transitioning from AIX to Linux. These changes come with additional levels of security requirements, requiring dedicated personnel to create a security hardened operating system installation. They will also need to be able to assess and implement deployable solutions in response to security threats, vulnerabilities and concerns.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, design, development, test, evaluation, and maintenance of software, operating system, and network computer hardware systems in an integrated manner.
  • Ensures the cybersecurity posture of the WAAS network is maintained during all maintenance, monitoring activities, installations or upgrades, and throughout day to day operations.
  • Ensures adherence to DOT Order 1351.37, Departmental Cybersecurity Policy.
  • Adheres to configuration management (CM) requirements, and performs changes as required.


Requirements

  • Knowledge and proficiency in software design and implementation techniques using Ansible, Python and Shell Scripting.
  • Cisco networking certifications is highly desired.
  • Ansible proficiency is desired.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of testing during all phases of the software development process.
  • Knowledge of computer operating systems, software and hardware with proven ability to debug complex systems and to conduct reviews, audits and testing.
  • Knowledge of UNIX/Linux networking concepts
  • Experience in configuring security hardened Linux operating systems
  • Experience in applying operating system security updates and patched
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Good written and spoken communication including developing technical documentation.


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Information Technology is required. A bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science may be substituted depending on qualifications and experience.
