About Us

At HDR, we specialize in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. While we are most well-known for adding beauty and structure to communities through high-performance buildings and smart infrastructure, we provide much more than that. We create an unshakable foundation for progress because our multidisciplinary teams also include scientists, economists, builders, analysts and artists. That's why we believe diversity is our greatest strength. HDR is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer.

We believe that the way we work can add meaning and value to the world. That ideas inspire positive change. That coloring outside the lines can illuminate fresh perspectives. And that small details yield important realizations. Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.

Are you a degreed geologist with a few years' experience who is looking for an opportunity to continue to hone your fieldwork skills, while taking on the challenge of coordinating or managing projects? Would you excel managing field teams, or working independently on complex geologic characterization projects? Are you seeking more opportunity and can bring a diverse skill set?

HDR is seeking to expand our Charlotte-based GeoEnvironmental Team. This team works as a cross-sector group to provide geologic and environmental services to a diverse client base including clients in the industrial/commercial, mining, power, waste, federal, and water sectors. Typical projects include Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, groundwater assessment and remediation, Brownfields assessments, hydrogeologic studies for mining and solid waste clients, NPDES permit compliance, periodic groundwater monitoring, geotechnical investigations, and bedrock characterization/fracture trace analysis. If you are looking for diversity of projects, clients, and day-to-day activities, we've got it!

This is not a job where the successful candidate will be "stuck" performing the same tasks daily. Our projects are typically located within the southeastern United States, but there is opportunity to perform work in other parts of the country, as HDR encourages work across business lines and with other offices located throughout the United States. Expect to be challenged, but also expect to be supported by a strong local and regional network of professional geologists and environmental professionals who will help you grow into your position and within greater HDR.

In the role of Geologist 2, we'll count on you to:

  • Follow industry and HDR standard practices to conduct fieldwork, prepare deliverable documents
  • Perform routine field assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures on projects that have clear, specified objectives and limited variables
  • Work independently, or lead a field team, on more complex projects
  • Coordinate fieldwork for more junior staff, manage smaller projects or specific tasks on larger projects
  • Interact with clients to facilitate fieldwork and delivery of reports
  • Give direction to clerical and technical personnel, as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Science, Hydrogeology or closely related field

  • Experience performing Phase I ESAs in remote locations
  • Experience conducting compliance groundwater sampling using various sampling methods at industrial, power, and municipal facilities

  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
  • Willingness to travel throughout the southeastern and Midwestern United States
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, gINT, Aqtesolv software to prepare site maps, boring logs, and evaluate hydrogeologic data
