OpenStack Engineer (VMware Migration)

Location: Montreal or Toronto
Languages: French and English required for candidates in Montreal and English for candidates based in Toronto.
Work Location: Hybrid, 3 Days in Office based on candidate location.
Job Summary:
We are looking for a skilled VMware Migration Engineer to join our team and play a key role in the migration of workloads and applications to VMware-based environments. This individual will be responsible for executing migration strategies, ensuring successful transitions, and optimizing VMware environments for performance and reliability. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with VMware technologies, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver seamless migration solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Migration Execution:
- Assist in the migration of workloads, applications, and infrastructure to VMware-based environments.
- Perform assessments of current systems and applications to determine migration readiness and potential challenges.
- Execute migration tasks, including virtual machine (VM) migrations, storage migrations, and network configurations.
- Support the creation of migration playbooks, scripts, and automation to streamline migration processes.
- Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
- Provide technical expertise and hands-on support during migration, including diagnosing and resolving issues related to VMware environments.
- Troubleshoot VMware-related technical issues and ensure that they are resolved promptly to maintain project timelines.
- Ensure minimal disruption during migrations by effectively managing system downtimes and performing tests to validate systems post-migration.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with VMware Architects, System Administrators, Network Engineers, and other IT professionals to ensure successful migration execution.
- Coordinate with stakeholders to track progress and report on migration status, issues, and risks.
- Communicate clearly with teams to ensure alignment of expectations and resolve any technical blockers.
- System Configuration and Optimization:
- Configure VMware environments to meet best practices for performance, scalability, and security.
- Assist with the optimization of VMware solutions to enhance operational efficiency and minimize resource usage.
- Test and validate VMware environments post-migration to ensure systems are performing optimally and securely.
- Documentation:
- Maintain accurate documentation of migration processes, configurations, and system settings.
- Provide post-migration reports and assist in the creation of knowledge bases or FAQs for future migrations.
- Document troubleshooting steps and solutions for common migration-related issues.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for improving migration processes and techniques based on lessons learned.
- Provide feedback on tools, procedures, and technologies that could improve the migration process.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest VMware technologies and best practices in virtualization and cloud migration.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience working with VMware products including vSphere, vCenter, vMotion, and other related technologies.
- Proven experience in the migration of virtualized workloads and infrastructure to VMware-based environments.
- Experience with migration tools and processes, particularly migration from VMWare to OpenStack.
- Experience in working with Coriolis and/or Hystax
- Hands-on experience in setting up, configuring, and maintaining VMware environments.
- Knowledge of virtualization, storage, and networking concepts within VMware ecosystems.
- Experience with migration tools such as VMware vSphere, vCenter, and third-party tools.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving VMware-related issues.
- Good understanding of server, storage, and networking configurations in virtualized environments.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate in English and French required if located in Montreal. If located in Toronto, English would be sufficient.
- Security/Reliability Clearance not required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or other VMware certifications with 3 – 5 years of experience.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies and hybrid cloud environments, particularly VMware Cloud on AWS.
- Experience with automation tools like Ansible, PowerShell, or Terraform in VMware environments.
- Familiarity with security best practices in virtualized environments.
- Understanding of backup and disaster recovery strategies in VMware ecosystems.
Working Environment:
- Collaborative team-oriented environment with a focus on cross-departmental cooperation.
- Occasional travel may be required for onsite migration support or meetings.
