Work for a family-owned company committed to doing local journalism the right way. Receive great training, work with a talented team, and build a meaningful career making a difference in the community.

Job Description

The News Producer develops and oversees compelling newscasts that reflect the ABC 17 News brand. Precise timing and good news judgment are essential to a successful newscast, but this job is more than stacking stories and keeping time. We’re looking for a journalist with strong editorial instincts, exceptional writing skills, and critical thinking to turn a rundown into an engaging, informative newscast. You’ll take ownership of your newscast from start to finish, making real-time editorial decisions, overseeing live broadcasts, and collaborating with reporters, anchors, and news managers.

Responsibilities include contributing to editorial discussions, developing story ideas, writing scripts, selecting video and graphics, and finding creative ways to bring stories to life on television. The ideal candidate is genuinely curious, constantly asking why and how to get to the heart of complex stories. You should be an avid consumer of local news who understands the issues, events, and trends shaping our community. ABC 17 News is a research-driven newsroom with a distinct brand. We’ll teach you our approach during onboarding, and we expect you to apply it every day through accurate, urgent, enterprise-minded, and viewer-focused storytelling. Producers will also be expected to contribute to digital platforms and assist with reporting or other newsroom duties as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer who cares about the details, from choosing the right words to ensuring accuracy, grammar, and spelling. You should have strong news judgment, an eye for compelling visuals, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. We’re looking for a proactive, creative, and collaborative journalist who takes initiative, embraces feedback, and accepts responsibility for the quality of their newscast. A college degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is preferred. Previous newsroom experience is a plus.
