About the Role
Nature’s news team seeks an ambitious science reporter for a January-June 2027 internship – a paid, full-time writing position based in our Washington DC or New York City offices (on a hybrid model).
Nature is an international journal publishing ground-breaking research; its newsroom, which is independent, produces must-read stories about science and science policy. Our interns are treated like staff reporters. They cover cutting-edge science, as well as activities at US science agencies. They travel locally for stories as appropriate, and write for both the website and print magazine. Initially, interns will be assigned stories, but ideally, will eventually pitch their own.
Although they primarily cover news, they will have the opportunity to write features. Top candidates will have a strong background in both science and journalism, and should be enthusiastic about writing stories for an audience of researchers, administrators and decision makers. Past interns have gone on to staff positions, including at Carbon Brief, Smithsonian, STAT, The New York Times, and Nature.
News interns will receive an hourly wage of $22.00.
This is a full-time role offered in either the New York or Washington, DC office. The location strategy supports the team structure and aligns with business needs.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
A University degree in a relevant subject
Background in science preferred, but not required (applicants who have published science journalism articles previously or completed a science writing/journalism programme will be weighted more heavily)
Capable of working in a deadline-driven environment
Contributes to an inclusive, collegial work environment
To apply:
Please submit a cover letter telling us what you’ll bring to the Nature newsroom and what topics you would want to cover;
a resume, and 3-5 samples of published journalism that you have written (please submit your clips along with your resume as a single PDF – please do not only submit links to the clips). Samples should include journalism clips or other reported pieces – please do not send scientific papers or other technical writing.
Applications are due by September 23rd. Early applications are encouraged.
US Hourly Pay is $22.00 per hour.
