Why This Role Matters

 

The Washington Post is seeking a creative and collaborative News Designer based on the West Coast to help shape the presentation of our journalism across digital platforms.

The News Design team is a group of visual journalists dedicated to elevating The Post’s reporting through compelling presentation and innovative storytelling. Working across washingtonpost.com, mobile experiences, newsletters, social platforms and emerging digital products, News Designers create visual packages that help readers better understand the news while strengthening The Post’s distinctive visual identity.

We are looking for a designer with strong visual judgment, a deep interest in news and a clear point of view about how design can make journalism more engaging and understandable. The ideal candidate is energized by collaborating with journalists across disciplines, balancing daily news demands with ambitious enterprise projects and brings curiosity, precision and creativity to complex editorial challenges.

This remote position can be based in Washington state or California and will require occasional night and weekend work.

How You'll Support the Mission
  • Create illustration and apply visual hierarchy to clarify ideas and improve the reader experience.

  • Design story presentations and visual packages that strengthen The Post’s journalism across digital platforms.

  • Develop digital storytelling approaches that are smart, accessible and tailored to the strengths of each platform.

  • Balance speed, creativity and editorial accuracy while working on deadline.

  • Contribute ideas that push The Post’s visual journalism forward.

  • Incorporate editorial rigor and design feedback throughout the production process.

  • Help maintain and evolve The Post’s visual standards across products and platforms.

The Skills and Experience You Bring
  • A portfolio that demonstrates exceptional visual design skills, creative thinking and a strong interest in journalistic storytelling.

  • Experience designing digital editorial experiences or other content-rich products.

  • A strong command of typography, composition, color and information hierarchy.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills.

  • The ability to manage multiple projects and produce high-quality work under deadline pressure.

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

  • Experience with design and prototyping tools such as Figma or Adobe XD. Experience with AfterEffects is a plus.

  • Experience with HTML, CSS or JavaScript, as well as familiarity with modern web frameworks such as React, Svelte, Angular or Vue, is a plus. Experience with illustration, animation, art direction or original visual creation is valued.

The starting salary range for this position is $85,100 - $127,700. The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
