The Role
Six-month nanofabrication internship focused on improving superconducting qubit coherence by reducing material-related losses. Responsibilities include reviewing fabrication techniques, fabricating circuits in a cleanroom using cleaning, lithography, and etching, characterizing devices with SEM, EDX, AFM, and room-temperature measurements, and continuously optimizing processes.
Summary Generated by Built In
Alice & Bob is developing the first universal, fault-tolerant quantum computer to solve the world’s hardest problems.
The quantum computer we envision building is based on a new kind of superconducting qubit: the Schrödinger cat qubit 🐈⬛. In comparison to other superconducting platforms, cat qubits have the astonishing ability to implement quantum error correction autonomously!
We're a diverse team of 250+ brilliant minds from over 35 countries united by a single goal: to revolutionise computing with a practical fault-tolerant quantum machine. Are you ready to take on unprecedented challenges and contribute to revolutionising technology? Join us, and let's shape the future of quantum computing together!
Purpose of the role
Superconducting qubits have come a long way in coherence time, but there is still room for progress. A major limit is microwave dielectric loss from two-level systems (TLS), which depends heavily on how circuits are fabricated.
Starting in March 2027, you will join the Process Development Engineering Team for six months and work to extend the coherence time of our circuits by cutting material-related losses, optimizing cleaning steps and introducing deoxidation steps in the fabrication flow. Along the way, you will master advanced fabrication and characterization techniques to reach state-of-the-art performance.
Responsibilities:
- Review the state of the art in superconducting circuit fabrication techniques
- Fabricate superconducting circuits in a cleanroom environment (cleaning, lithography, etching, etc.)
- Characterize fabricated devices (SEM, EDX, AFM, basic room-temperature measurements, etc.)
- Continuously improve fabrication and characterization techniques
Requirements:
- Master degree in Nanotechnology , applied physics
- Some knowledge of nanofabrication
- Proficiency in English
- The curiosity and rigor to keep improving a process, one experiment at a time
- Availability for a 6-month internship starting in March 2027
Benefits:
- 1 day off per month
- Half of transportation cost coverage (as per French law)
- Meal vouchers with Swile, as well as access to a fully equipped and regularly stocked kitchen
