Responsibilities
  • Research, pitch, and report original stories within the organization's editorial scope, prioritizing narratives with strong visual potential.
  • Cultivate the ability to spot compelling characters, scenes, moments, and environments that translate effectively to screen.
  • Conduct insightful interviews and collect accurate, verified information from both primary and secondary sources.
  • Capture high-quality video and photography on location, refining skills in framing, composition, lighting, sound, and visual sequencing.
  • Plan visual narratives through the creation of treatments, shot lists, storyboards, and production briefs.
  • Craft engaging video scripts, voice overs, captions, headlines, and supporting digital copy.
  • Acquire practical video editing and post-production capabilities, including sequencing, sound design, graphics, subtitles, and basic color correction.
  • Produce short-form and long-form video content for social media, digital publications, documentaries, and other organizational products.
  • Understand how platform dynamics, formats, and audience behaviors shape visual storytelling while maintaining editorial integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with editors, producers, graphic designers, illustrators, animators, and technology teams to enhance visual narratives.
  • Experiment with animation, data visualization, mobile journalism, and emerging storytelling tools to elevate the story.
  • Uphold informed consent, source protection, conflict sensitivity, and journalistic ethics, especially when filming vulnerable individuals or communities impacted by violence or humanitarian crises.
  • Establish sound field-safety protocols, equipment management, and risk-assessment practices.
  • Analyze audience and editorial feedback to refine the clarity, utility, and engagement of visual journalism.
  • Transition from supporting roles to independently conceiving, reporting, shooting, and producing complete visual stories.

Skills Required

  • Strong writing, reporting, interviewing, and fact-verification skills
  • Ability to capture high-quality video and photography, including framing, lighting, sound, and visual sequencing
  • Ability to develop treatments, shot lists, storyboards, and production briefs
  • Ability to write video scripts, voiceovers, captions, headlines, and digital copy
