The lab of Dr. Zhijian "James" Chen is looking for an organized and thoughtful Mouse Research Manager to support the science of their lab. The Chen Lab's research revolves around the common theme of cell signaling and host defense - they are broadly interested in mechanisms of signal transduction, namely how a cell communicates with its surroundings and within itself. In particular, they are fascinated by how a cell detects harmful or foreign insults and mounts an appropriate response to restore homeostasis. More information can be found on their website.

About the Role:

In this role, you will be responsible for managing the mouse colony and all associated tasks related to that effort. Additionally, you will be assisting other members of the team with various experiments in support of the lab’s research goals. Ideal candidates will be determined, creative, and willing to tackle novel challenges, and you will need to be comfortable managing multiple priorities and your time. What You'll Do:

  • Oversee mouse colony cages comprised of various mice strains.

  • Maintain and develop various genotypes/strains of different knockout mice

  • Writing/renewing regulatory protocols (IBC, IRB, and IACUC) and submitting amendments.

  • Write animal protocols and ensuring compliance with institutional and Federal guidelines, including DEA and Texas state registrations, environmental health and laboratory safety, and animal care regulations.

  • Perform a variety of laboratory and molecular biology procedures including PCR, DNA transfections, cell culture.

  • Use specialized software applications to assemble, format, and manipulate experimental data, and/or perform statistical analyses of data.

  • May train and direct the work of other laboratory personnel with respect to proper techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures while working with mice

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Graduate degrees a plus but not required. Individuals who have a veterinary technician degree are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Four or more years of related research experience.

  • Excellent attention to detail with meticulous record-keeping skills

  • Prior hands-on experience managing a mouse colony, and comfort with working day to day with mice and other animal models.

  • Familiarity with tissue culture and sterile techniques.

  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.

  • Ability to develop instructional materials to support training.

  • Proactive and self-motivated mentality with an eagerness to learn and grow.

  • Proficient digital literacy with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials such as mouse cages.

Compensation Range

$49,300.00 (minimum) - $61,613.76 (midpoint) - $80,100.00 (maximum)

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
