Purpose of the role

To manage business development and set the strategic direction. Provide support to the bank's senior management team, and to manage business development risk across the organisation. 

Accountabilities

  • Development of strategic direction for business development, including the implementation of up to date methodologies and processes.
  • Management of business development activities, including oversight of colleagues and their performance, implementation of departmental goals and objectives, oversight of department efficiency and effectiveness.  .
  • Relationship management of business development stakeholders, including identifying relevant stakeholders, and maintenance of the quality of external third party services.
  • Development and implementation of policies and procedures for business development.
  • Management of business development risk, including identification of potential risks, development of strategies to mitigate those risks, and maintenance of alignment between the bank’s business development and compliance functions.  .
  • Monitoring the financial performance of the business development department, including revenue, profitability, and cost control.
  • Conducting thorough market research to understand market trends, competitive landscape, and regulatory changes to identify market opportunities.

Join us as a Mortgage Market Leader, where you’ll play a key role in growing residential mortgage business through close partnerships with brokers and intermediaries. You’ll take the lead in building and maintaining relationships that generate a steady flow of new opportunities, turning these into active pipeline and completed lending. Alongside this, you’ll stay close to market trends to identify new ways to grow and strengthen the mortgage proposition.

You’ll also play an important part in making sure activity is delivered in a well‑controlled way, working with governance, risk, and compliance teams across the UK and Crown Dependencies. This includes supporting third‑party oversight, financial crime requirements, and ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and internal frameworks.

As a visible presence in the market, you’ll represent Barclays at key industry events and act as a trusted contact for a wide range of external stakeholders, including developers, estate agents, housing organisations, regulators, and high-value clients. Internally, you’ll contribute to product and cross-team activity, helping connect commercial priorities with governance and customer outcomes.

This is a varied role that combines business growth, external engagement, and oversight, where your ability to build relationships, navigate complexity, and keep things moving will make a real difference.

To be successful as a Mortgage Market Leader, you should have experience with:

  • Residential mortgage lending, including a clear understanding of products and mortgage intermediaries.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with mortgage brokers to generate new business opportunities.
  • Supporting or working within governance, risk, and compliance frameworks in a financial services setting.
  • Representing an organisation externally and engaging with senior stakeholders, clients, and industry partners.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Relevant qualifications such as CeMAP.
  • Confidence in communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders and external partners.
  • Ability to balance commercial goals with regulatory and governance expectations.
  • Awareness of mortgage advice to support credible conversations with mortgage intermediaries.
  • Energy and motivation to build business momentum in a competitive market.
