Together with our network partners, we serve nearly half a million food-insecure people across 35 counties in eastern Wisconsin each year.  

JOB PURPOSE:

  

The Milwaukee Market Match Intern will support Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin’s Food Systems & Strategy team in implementing and evaluating the Milwaukee Market Match program. This program provides nutrition incentives to FoodShare participants at farmers markets across Milwaukee County, helping increase access to fresh, local foods.

This internship provides hands-on learning in community engagement, program coordination, data tracking, and nonprofit program operations. The role offers opportunities for professional development through participation in farmers market operations, data collection and evaluation, outreach activities, and collaboration with internal teams and community partners.

Key Learning Responsibilities

  

Market Program Operations:
Support the implementation of the Milwaukee Market Match program by assisting with farmers market operations, program setup, and incentive distribution processes.

Community Engagement:
Attend farmers markets to engage with shoppers, answer questions about the program, and support outreach efforts that connect FoodShare participants to healthy food options.

Survey & Data Collection:
Conduct shopper surveys and assist with gathering feedback from market participants to support program evaluation and improvement.

Data Tracking & Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of coupon distribution and redemption, assist with data entry, and support the tracking of program metrics to ensure compliance with grant requirements.

Program Logistics:
Assist with tracking and distributing program supplies such as coupons, signage, and outreach materials to participating markets.

Outreach & Promotion:
Support distribution of multilingual outreach materials and assist with community events, meetings, or coalition activities that strengthen awareness of the program.

Impact & Evaluation:
Assist in compiling data and developing summaries that highlight program outcomes, trends, and opportunities for improvement.

Professional Exposure:
Participate in internal meetings, observe program planning processes, and gain exposure to how partnerships and community-based programs operate within a nonprofit organization.

Other duties as assigned, with a focus on professional development and learning.

Internship Structure

Duration: June through August 2026
Schedule: Approximately 29 hours per week, including regular Saturday farmers market shifts
Compensation: Paid internship (hourly rate $18/hour)
Supervision & Mentorship: The intern will work under the guidance of the Advocacy & Program Coordinator and will have opportunities for mentorship and professional development throughout the internship.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Interest in food systems, public health, nonprofit programs, or community engagement.
  • Strong  written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong  organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation to attend farmers markets (mileage reimbursement available).
  • Availability for regular Saturday farmers market shifts and occasional evenings.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is performed in an office, warehouse, and community setting. Noise levels may vary. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. and standing for extended periods may be required. Reasonable accommodations can be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
