Hazen and Sawyer is seeking an ambitious Mid- to Senior-Level Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Systems Engineer to join our Midwest team in our Nashville, TN office. The candidate will lead project-level I&C systems engineering services and mentor / supervise junior staff,. This position offers the opportunity to lead challenging water and wastewater projects from planning and design through construction, startup, and commissioning while working directly with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead engineering studies and assessments, prepare associated technical memoranda and reports, including Basis of Design documents, Preliminary Engineering Reports, alternatives evaluations, and other technical deliverables.
- Lead the development of complete, biddable, cyber-informed and technically accurate instrumentation and control (I&C) drawings, including process and instrumentation diagrams, process flow diagrams, control system and network architecture diagrams, control panel layouts and wiring diagrams, installation details, and related drawings.
- Develop and edit technical specifications for instrumentation and control systems, system integration, SCADA, networking, and related work, and contribute to the development and maintenance of Hazen’s master specifications and standard details.
- Participate in site visits, field investigations, client workshops, and project meetings.
- Coordinate I&C designs across engineering disciplines, including process/mechanical, electrical, structural, architectural, HVAC, plumbing, and site civil, to provide complete and coordinated design documents.
- Perform quality control reviews of calculations, drawings, specifications, and other technical deliverables prepared by others, with an emphasis on technical accuracy, constructability, consistency, and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Assist with engineering services during construction, including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to Requests for Information, evaluating field conditions, and preparing field directives and design clarifications.
- Perform construction-phase field services, including inspection and observation of I&C installations, witnessing equipment and system testing, and evaluating work performed by contractors and system integrators for conformance with the contract documents.
- Support startup, testing, and commissioning activities, including functional testing of instrumentation, control systems, PLCs, SCADA systems, communications networks, and integrated process equipment.
- Develop and review cost estimates for I&C, control system integration, SCADA, communication networks, and related project work in conjunction with Hazen’s cost estimating group.
- Establish and maintain relationships with clients, teaming partners, contractors, and system integrators; support business development activities; and develop project scopes, fee estimates, and proposals.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers, including oversight and review of technical work, guidance on design approaches, and support staff development.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in engineering from an accredited engineering program.
- 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including relevant I&C, controls, electrical, or industrial process experience.
- Experience with instrumentation and control systems used in water/wastewater treatment or similar industrial process facilities.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC), and other applicable codes, standards, and industry practices related to instrumentation, controls, electrical systems, and industrial facilities.
- Experience with, or demonstrated familiarity with, electrical design and the interface between electrical and I&C systems.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to coordinate effectively with clients, multidisciplinary design teams, contractors, vendors, and system integrators.
- Ability to lead technical work, manage competing priorities, and deliver multiple projects or assignments concurrently.
- Experience with industrial communications and control system networks, including common industrial Ethernet and fieldbus architectures.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license. Candidate must be licensed in Tennessee or have the ability to obtain Tennessee PE licensure by comity/reciprocity within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience with municipal water and wastewater treatment plant instrumentation, controls, and SCADA systems.
- Experience using Bluebeam and/or AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Plant 3D. · Experience with PLC, HMI, and SCADA system configuration and programming and use of the software to do so.
- Working knowledge of Industrial Control System / Operation Technology (ICS/OT) cybersecurity principles and applicable standards and guidance.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams, managing project workload, and supervising or mentoring technical staff.
- Experience developing project scopes, fee estimates, proposals, and client-facing technical presentations.
