The Role
Develop, design, and test microfabricated Paul (ion) traps: create fabrication flows and design rules, liaise with manufacturers, design test masks, work with package designers, document designs and simulations, and port novel microfabrication techniques into manufacturable processes.
Summary Generated by Built In

At Universal Quantum, we aim to make the world a better place by developing a new computer technology. Together, we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. Our machines will be capable of solving problems until now considered impossible, with applications ranging across a broad range of industries, including healthcare, materials and aerospace.

We are looking to hire a Foundry Engineer to develop, design, work with fabricators, and test microfabricated Paul traps for quantum computers. Passionate about helping create technologies which can change the world? We may be the right place for you, so get in touch!

What You’ll Accomplish

  • Create and review fabrication flows with external manufacture partners
  • Act as technical liaison with ion trap manufacturers
  • Create design rules and product development kits for use in design
  • Work with package designers to develop packages and assembly procedures
  • Designs masks for test purposes to inform future designs
  • Document designs and simulations
  • Work on diverse projects spanning a wide range of microfabrication techniques

Requirements

The 3 Most Critical Attributes We’ll Use to Compare Candidates

  1. Hands-on microfabrication techniques
  2. GDS mask design abilities
  3. Strong communication skills

Must-have Skills

  • Hands on experience in cleanrooms designing, running and testing microfabrication flows
  • Mask design (e.g. KLayout)
  • Able to write clear, technical documents
  • Experience with design for test and manufacture
  • Must be able to work with physicists, engineers, and non-technical team members
  • Familiar with electrical testing methods and equipment
  • PhD/master's degree in physics, electronic engineering, or a related discipline
  • Ability to research novel microfabrication techniques and port to manufacturable flows

Nice-to-have Skills

  • Experience fabricating ion traps
  • FEM analysis in a commercial tool – ideally ANSYS
  • Design and implement test harnesses of microfabricated structures
  • Package and assembly design experience
  • Experience working with commercial foundries
  • Familiarity with commercial design toolset (Synopsys, Custom Compiler etc.)

Skills Required

  • Hands-on experience in cleanrooms designing, running and testing microfabrication flows
  • Mask design (e.g. KLayout) / GDS mask design abilities
  • Able to write clear, technical documents
  • Experience with design for test and manufacture
  • Ability to work with physicists, engineers, and non-technical team members
  • Familiarity with electrical testing methods and equipment
  • PhD or Master's degree in physics, electronic engineering, or a related discipline

What We Do

A quantum computer harnesses the fundamental forces that govern the physical world. It can efficiently model complex systems in ways that would take the best classical computer millions of years, and so help revolutionise drug design, climate modelling, battery chemistry, and many other vital processes. But to achieve all this, we need to make quantum computers work reliably at scale. We started Universal Quantum to meet this challenge - because we believe that by doing so, we can help solve the most difficult problems faced by humanity. We’re following a pragmatic, engineering-based roadmap to build a device that is useful in the real world: a quantum computer that has utility. Every approach we take, every solution we devise, is geared towards this goal
