About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised nearly $3 billion in capital, making us the largest and leading private fusion company in the world.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Metrology Engineer Contractor

CFS is seeking a motivated metrology engineer to develop and qualify mechanical inspection techniques for highly engineered hardware for the SPARC project. This role requires close collaboration with a talented cross-functional team, including supply chain, manufacturing, design, and R&D, to ensure that all design requirements are met.

The ideal candidate will excel in cross-functional communication and be operationally adept at quickly identifying solutions to challenging metrology needs. The candidate should have a strong technical background and be proactive in working across departments to establish and maintain robust processes and systems.

What you'll do:

  • Develop advanced mechanical inspection techniques for complex inspection challenges
  • Qualify and document these techniques appropriately under the guidance of quality engineering
  • Work collaboratively with quality and manufacturing engineers
  • Assist quality engineers in evaluating new investments in advanced metrology equipment
  • Maintain metrology equipment and perform 5S activities
  • Provide design for inspection input during the development of engineering drawings and standards
  • Cross-train as a quality technician to perform routine inspections on an as-needed basis
  • Summarize and present results of critical dimensional inspections
  • Design and procure fixturing as required to support inspections

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience in lieu of a degree
  • 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing or field environment
  • Experience developing advanced metrology techniques
  • Experience presenting technical information to a broad audience
  • Interpretation of complex mechanical drawings and GD&T
  • Knowledge of standard machining processes
  • Experience programming metrology or manufacturing equipment
  • CAD design experience
  • CMM programming experience (Zeiss Calypso preferred)
  • Experience using portable metrology equipment (Creaform, Laser Tracker, or CMM Arm)
  • Polyworks Inspector Software experience (preferred)
  • CAD design experience (Siemens NX preferred)
  • Knowledge of basic quality systems requirements
  • Ability to utilize Atlassian productivity tools (Jira, Confluence)

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with various metrology equipment
  • Experience implementing procedures and work instructions
  • Knowledge of basic statistical tools (gage R&R, DOE, etc.)
  • Quality experience in a regulated industry (i.e. aerospace, medical)
  • Working knowledge of ERP and MES systems
  • Experience working as a field metrologist

Must-have requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
