Position Description
• Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Department Director, the Medical Technologist performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Work assignments and training will require patient involvement with all age populations including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. May be required to supervise lab assistants, medical lab technicians, and medical technologists with less training or experience.


Essential Position Responsibilities
• The essential position responsibilities are the basis for the 90 day and annual evaluation. This list is intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed and not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties required of personnel.
1. Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests. Must solve any questionable requests.
2. Performs all assigned laboratory procedures accurately and precisely in a timely manner. This includes the specialties of chemistry, special chemistry, hematology, coagulation, immunohematology, microbiology, serology, and urinalysis.
3. Responsible for specimen handling and test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
4. Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.
5. Performs and documents appropriate preventive maintenance and troubleshoots equipment as required to insure proper operation for high quality test performance.
6. Performs and documents instrument calibrations.
7. Maintains appropriate documentation of critical/panic values.
8. Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
9. Performs proficiency testing samples in the same manner as patient specimens.
10. Documents corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
11. Demonstrates knowledge of and sensitivity to the age specific competencies of all ages including infants, children, adults, and the elderly.
12. Operates Laboratory Information System efficiently.
13. Participates in Laboratory Performance Improvement Activities.
14. Adheres to hospital infection control policies and procedures.
15. Adheres to organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
16. Participates in continuing education.
17. Performs all other related assignments and special projects as requested.
18. Supports Evans Memorial Hospital’s mission, vision and philosophy.

Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science degree in MT or Associates degree in MLT.  Or equivalent in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences with clinical laboratory experience and/or registered as a MT or MLT in accordance with the standards of the Department of Human Resources of Georgia. ASCP registry preferred. Other organizations (AMT, AAB, ISCLT) certify technologists without a bachelor’s degree if a combination of certain academics and experience is met. However, a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology is required for technical consultants and certain supervisory positions. • Possesses a valid and current license.
• Computer skills desirable.
• Current certification in Basic Life Support.
 

Physical/Mental Demands
• Ability to think and work effectively under stress with frequent interruptions; to move, sit, stand, walk, and bend intermittently throughout the work day. Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable the applicant to adequately fulfill the requirements of this position.
• Use of mechanical and technical equipment required for the responsibilities assigned.
• External and internal applicants who are/become disabled, must be able to perform the essential position responsibilities unaided or with assistance of a reasonable accommodation to be determined on a case by case basis.
 

Occupational Exposure to Blood borne Pathogens
• Category I – Routinely involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or airborne particles.
 

Orientation Period
• Up to 90 days to perform proficiently all essential position responsibilities. The first ninety (90) days this position is assumed is considered the probationary/introductory period, for which the employee is subject to continuous review.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, or equivalent in chemical/physical/biological sciences with clinical laboratory experience and/or registration as MT or MLT per Georgia Department of Human Resources
  • Valid and current professional laboratory license
  • ASCP registry
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Computer skills / ability to operate Laboratory Information System
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks (stand, walk, bend intermittently)
