McKenney's seeks a detail-oriented Mechanical Systems Designer to develop accurate, timely CAD drawings and models for commercial and light-industrial mechanical systems. You'll collaborate with our engineering team to create high-quality HVAC, piping, and plumbing designs that enhance building performance and client satisfaction. JOB SUMMARY
The Mechanical Systems Designer prepares design and shop drawings for HVAC, mechanical piping, and plumbing systems—including dimensioned plans, sections, details, equipment schedules, and control diagrams. Working directly with engineers and field personnel, you'll create coordinated multi-disciplinary drawing packages using AutoCAD and Revit while adhering to McKenney's standards, applicable codes, and BIM execution plans.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create 2D and 3D CAD models of HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems in compliance with project criteria, building codes, and company standards
- Coordinate mechanical systems with other trades to resolve conflicts and ensure constructability
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and field teams to translate concepts, sketches, and specifications into accurate drawings
- Communicate proactively with stakeholders regarding design progress, challenges, and schedule updates
- Participate in coordination meetings with other trades to develop fully integrated models
- Manage file organization, model updates, and compliance with filing standards
- Support Revit family creation and content development with Senior Designers
- Produce shop drawings and as-built documentation using Bluebeam and related tools
- Train and mentor co-op students on department standards and CAD best practices
- Track requests for information and shop drawing progress using company management tools
- Deliver all work on time, within budget, and to client specifications
- Associate's degree (or higher) in CAD, Construction Technology, or related field
- Minimum 3 years' experience in mechanical/plumbing trades OR 3 years' design experience using Revit MEP 2018+
- Experience with Autodesk Fabrication CADmep
- Ability to lay out and resize mechanical ductwork, piping, and plumbing systems
- Strong spatial reasoning and ability to visualize 3D layouts from 2D drawings
- Strong command of mechanical, architectural, and structural drawings
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (MEP platforms)
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet concurrent deadlines
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and proactive in problem-solving
- Willingness to learn and seek mentorship on mechanical systems design
- Collaborative mindset with strong work ethic and commitment to quality
- Flexibility to accommodate overtime when project demands require
- Primary work in office environment
- Occasional construction site visits requiring ability to navigate stairs, ladders, temporary hoists, and active work areas
- May lift/handle objects up to 25 lbs. occasionally
Skills Required
- Associate's degree or higher in CAD, Construction Technology, or a related field
- At least 3 years of experience in mechanical or plumbing trades, or 3 years of design experience using Revit MEP 2018 or newer
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit MEP
- Strong command of mechanical, architectural, and structural drawings
- Ability to lay out and resize mechanical ductwork, piping, and plumbing systems
- Experience with Autodesk Fabrication CADmep
