The Role

Mechanical Engineer

Burbank, CA

Applied Invention is a multi-disciplinary innovation company that partners with corporations to design and build new technologies to help them grow and adapt to rapidly changing environments.

We are a group of experienced technologists that have especially strong skills in building complex systems that incorporate data analytics, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, machine learning, distributed sensors, robotics, and data visualization. We work at the speed of a startup, with quality that comes from years of working together as a cohesive team.

Our relationships with our partners, primarily Fortune 1000 companies, are confidential and encompass a broad range of industries including agriculture, transportation, manufacturing, information technology, energy, medical and healthcare. We will only work with one company in each industry.

If you are a self-starter who shares our passion for solving problems that matter, for pushing the limits of what’s possible, and for asking hard questions, we want to meet you.

Description

The Mechanical Engineer designs and builds tangible and functional products in an R & D environment.  This is a hands-on role for the mechanical designer with a passion for making things. Being on site in our Burbank facility is required so that you can both work on equipment and become a member of a diverse and collaborative team of highly skilled engineers from many disciplines.

Position Responsibilities

  • Work with a dedicated team of R & D engineers to develop novel robotic systems for a wide variety of projects and industry applications including our current project, designing mechanical sub-systems for a robotic horticulture facility.
  • This role will primarily consist of designing in CAD, then building & iterating mechanical prototypes using our fleet of fabrication machines.
  • Partner with electrical and software teams to integrate robotic systems

Skills/Qualifications

  • BS degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 8+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Designer preferably in an R & D environment
  • Experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment a plus.
  • Critical thinking: demonstrated creativity, the ability to challenge assumptions and make data driven decisions and recommendations
  • Hands on building – ability to model a concept, fabricate, assemble, test and iterate.
  • Exceptional judgement regarding the application of detail design vs rapid prototyping approach to your work with the ability to do both well.
  • Advanced fabrication skills: proven ability to transfer designs to CNC programming and to use a variety of tools in well-equipped machine shop to fabricate and test prototypes.  This includes CAM & CNC, manual mill & lathe, injection molding, welding, EDM, stamping, FDM & SLA printing
  • Flexibility: must thrive in a fast-paced creative environment and you can wear multiple hats, from CADing & coding at your desk to machining parts & wiring custom enclosures to building things on-site & getting your hands dirty.
  • Advanced materials applications and manufacturing experience including high performance alloys, composites and engineering plastics
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with team members from diverse disciplines
  • Ability to integrate electronics, microcontrollers, motors, sensors and pneumatics a strong plus.
  • Must have a passion for making and building things

Applied Invention is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to fair and equitable compensation and thoughtfully consider a wide range of factors when determining individual compensation. The expected base annual salary range for this role is between $125,000 – 160,000.
