About the Company

Are you excited to create sustainable solutions to real-world problems? Are you sick of long reporting chains and want to help build a company from the ground up? Then come join our team at Red Barn Robotics! We are a Seattle based start-up building autonomous weeding robots that will revolutionize organic farming and transform our food system. We're a YC funded startup, here to build real technology that solves real problems for real farmers. Our team moves fast and isn't afraid to get our hands dirty in the field (literally). Come join us and build the technology needed to feed the world!

Overview of the Role

We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to join our team. We are a small team so you will have ownership of mission critical systems, but we need someone who thrives on solving the problems that we are sure to encounter along the way. We are seeking a creative problem solver who possesses an intuitive grasp of physics and engineering fundamentals, is equally comfortable hacking together a prototype as they are troubleshooting issues that come up in the field. We need someone who is excited about solving the tough engineering challenges required to innovate with our team.

Must Haves:

  • Vehicle Design Experience: You know how to build something that moves

  • Seattle-Based/Willing to Move: We build physical stuff - you need to be where the robots are

  • 5+ Years Getting Stuff Done: You've built real things that really work

  • Fast Prototyper: You know how to test a concept in a days, not a months

  • Scrappy as Hell: MacGyver is your spirit animal - you can build amazing things with limited resources

  • Direct Communicator: You speak up when something's wrong and can explain complex ideas simply

  • Mission-Driven: You care about bringing the future of sustainable farming to life

Nice to Haves:

  • Jack/Jill of All Trades: You are excited to build as a team and hate hearing people say "that's not my job"

  • Startup Experience: You've thrived in fast paced environments before

  • Field-Tough Design Skills: You know how to build things that don't break when they hit a rock

  • Farm Experience: You’ve either spent time on a farm or working directly with farm machinery

Why Join Us:

  • Ownership: Maximize your time working on cool problems

  • Near-term Impact: Your designs will be in the field helping farmers within weeks, not years

  • No Red Tape: No need to spend your time navigating 15 approval layers

  • Own Critical Systems: You will be building the core of our competitive advantage

  • Impact The Planet: Help make organic farming economically viable at scale

  • Grow With Us: Help build a new company culture instead of trying to fit into someone else's

Skills Required

  • Experience designing vehicles or other systems that move
  • Based in Seattle or willing to relocate to Seattle
  • At least 5 years of experience building real, functioning products
  • Ability to rapidly prototype and test concepts
  • Strong resourcefulness and ability to build with limited resources
  • Strong direct communication skills and ability to explain complex ideas simply
  • Passion for sustainable farming and the company mission
  • Broad willingness to contribute across team responsibilities
  • Startup experience
  • Experience designing durable equipment for harsh field conditions
  • Farm or agricultural machinery experience
