Nightwing is seeking a highly motivated and detail oriented Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team at Nightwing’s Springfield, VA location. This is an onsite internship, ideal for individuals ready to apply their technical knowledge in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment. A successful candidate must be a professional self-starter who possesses a positive attitude and works well with both engineering and technician teams.
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support active programs
- Design and analysis of tools/mechanisms, creation of detailed fabrication drawings, mechanical testing, rapid prototyping and assembly, report and presentation writing, and design review support
Basic Qualifications:
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing a M.S. or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (e.g., Mechatronic, Aerospace, Systems Engineering)
- Rising Junior or Senior by the start of Summer 2026, a GPA of 3.0 or higher in a 4.0 grade scale is desired
- U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and retain a U.S. Top Secret Clearance (if hired full time after graduation)
- Experience or coursework with CAD software package for mechanical design and documentation (SolidWorks preferred)
- Foundational knowledge of engineering coursework and principles
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proficient with MS Office tools including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project
- Ability to adapt to shifting program and task priorities
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, collaborative team environment balancing diverse project tasks and types
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Desired Skills:
- Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly or working knowledge of common hand and powered tools
- Coursework in Mechanical Engineering
- Coursework in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Prior exposure to team-based projects and collaborative problem-solving settings
- Experience with laboratory testing
- Proficiency in computational analysis software (e.g., Matlab, Python, MathCad)
