Description: Designs and develops machines for mechanical systems by performing the following duties:

Position Summary

  • Lead designs of mechanical installations, assemblies and layouts.
  • Create and validate detailed designs and drawings using CAD tools.
  • Develop manufacturing-ready drawings, BOMs and technical details for machining, welding, assembly and installations.
  • Involve in the entire process, from sketching an idea through the manufacturing and testing of the finished product.
  • Throughout development, the senior mechanical engineer works with designers and junior engineers to identify any areas of the design that need to be altered or improved.
  • Study, research and analyze customer specifications, and other data to assist in creating machine layouts.
  • Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs which can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods.
  • Performs a variety of complicated engineering tasks.
  • When needed will direct and lead the work of others with direction from manager.
  • Confers with the design engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.
  • Prepares designs & sketches for designers to produce subassemblies or finished details.
  • Assist and support other business units as needed as part of project implementation and machine assembly.
  • Assist and create project documentation from project notice to proceed and final testing and calibration.
  • Assist in continuous improvement of department tools and enhancements.
  • Additional duties assigned by manager as deemed necessary for the business need.
  • Represent engineering in cross-functional team meetings and contribute in team Colloboration when assigned by the manager.
  • Able to work and adapt to the changes of job priorities to fulfill the business needs.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

    Education:

    Require a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering Major with at least 5-7 years of experience with a strong
    emphasis on Mechanical Design and engineering concepts in the field of heavy equipment machinery design.

    In addition to having the technical qualifications, as a Mechanical Engineer II must be a good team leader with strong communication and problem-solving skills. The individual must be able to think practically and authoritatively, able to accommodate the company's deadlines, budget, and other resources to make informed decisions for their projects.

    Knowledge: Incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
    Knowledge of Mechanical Design.
    Skills: Incumbent must demonstrate or participate in internal/external training programs to obtain the following skills:
  • Knowledge of the current ISO andANSI (Y14) standards.
  • Working knowledge of the metric system and geometric dimensioning and tolerance.
  • Familiar with weldments, and machining operation.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Motivated and self-starter with the ability to work under deadlines.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as Calculus and modern Algebra.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and
    deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • AREMA, AAR, S.A.E. membership helpful but not required.

Working Conditions

    The unavoidable, externally imposed conditions under which the work must be performed and which create
    hardship for the incumbent including the frequency and duration of occurrence of physical demands, environmental conditions, demands on one’s senses and metal demands.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
     
    The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
     
    Environmental Conditions:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The
    employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and fumes or airborne particles.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
     
    Mental Demands:
    (Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue)
    There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause stress. The incumbent must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues.

Skills Required

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5-7 years of experience in Mechanical Design
  • Knowledge of current ISO and ANSI standards
  • Familiar with weldments and machining operations
  • Membership in AREMA, AAR, or SAE
