The Role
Design, build, and test mechanical systems for autonomous tunnel-machines, focusing on structures, chassis, and heavy-equipment hydraulic systems. Own hardware through lifecycle, produce manufacturing and test documentation, integrate subsystems, select materials, track mass/cost/schedules, and support qualification testing (acoustic, vibration, shock, thermal). Incorporate field feedback to iterate designs.
Summary Generated by Built In

Traysar was founded in 2025 by second time tech founders, recipients of the Israel Defense Prize, and engineers from elite military units, the Boring Company and SpaceX. Backed by Lux Capital and the founders of Anduril, the leading autonomous defense company, Traysar is reclaiming Western Deterrence by developing and deploying technologies for the 5th domain of warfare: the underground.

Job Summary

Traysar is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team.

The machines you are responsible for designing and getting built will be used to destroy hundreds of miles of tunnels currently used for terrorist activities. The candidate will work alongside a product team of electrical and mechanical engineers and report to the team lead.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, build and test every mechanical aspect of the machine, including all structures, fluid systems (hydraulics), and chassis components.

  • Own hardware through the product life cycle (design, analysis, build, and test) and interface with others to define design requirements and implement solutions. This includes soldiers in the field who will give feedback on how to make improvements to the machine.

  • Comprehensive design documentation for component manufacturing, assembly, and testing.

  • Design and integrate subsystems for an autonomous mechanical machine operating in tunnels.

  • Research and select appropriate materials.

  • Create and maintain detailed tracking spreadsheets for system mass and cost, and build schedules for piece parts and assemblies.

  • Support qualification plans (e.g., acoustic, vibration, shock, static load, thermal tests) to verify structural and thermal safety margins and correlate to analysis models.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years of work experience.

  • Degree in any field of engineering or equivalent training.

  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling and 2D drawing specifications.

  • Experience with heavy equipment hydraulic systems (tractors, excavators, mining systems).

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency with NX/SolidWorks

  • Demonstrated skills in FEA for structural analysis (ex ANSYS, FEMAP/Nastran)

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles.

  • Hydraulic system design.

  • Experience with machining, sheet metal and 3D printing design and manufacturing techniques.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively.

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.

  • Experience with hands-on mechanical engineering work.

If there is a fit, we'll schedule two technical interviews. For the second one you will prepare a short presentation about something you built that you are proud of. Those who pass the technical interviews will proceed to a third and final interview on-site.
