Master Thesis - Evaluation of ESD-Safe 3D-Printed Fixtures for Automotive Electronics Testing
Job descriptions may display in multiple languages based on your language selection.
What we offer:Job Responsibilities:
Magna Electronics utilizes a wide range of fixtures throughout product development and testing to securely hold electronic components and assemblies. Today, these fixtures are typically manufactured from aluminum to provide durability and repeatability.
As electronics become increasingly sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD), there is growing interest in alternative fixture solutions that combine ESD protection, flexibility, and cost efficiency. Recent advancements in additive manufacturing create opportunities to replace traditional aluminum fixtures with ESD-safe 3D-printed alternatives.
In this thesis project, you will investigate the feasibility of using ESD-safe polymer materials and 3D printing technologies for test fixtures used in product development and validation activities.
The project will include:
- Evaluation of ESD-safe 3D printing materials
- Design and manufacturing of prototype fixtures
- Mechanical durability testing
- Assessment of ESD protection performance
- Analysis of how environmental aging impacts material properties
- Comparison of 3D-printed fixtures against existing aluminum solutions
You will collaborate with experienced engineers and have access to Magna's laboratories, testing equipment, and 3D-printing facilities.
Expected Outcome
The project aims to determine whether ESD-safe 3D-printed fixtures can provide a practical alternative to conventional aluminum fixtures.
Expected deliverables include:
- Evaluation of suitable ESD-safe materials
- Recommendations for fixture design guidelines
- Assessment of relevant printing methods and parameters
- Test results comparing material performance before and after environmental exposure
- Validation of at least one fixture concept
- Recommendations for future implementation within Magna
Qualifications
You are a curious and motivated student with a strong analytical mindset and an interest in solving technical challenges. You enjoy learning new technologies, taking initiative, and collaborating with others to find innovative solutions. Most importantly, you are eager to apply your academic knowledge to a real-world engineering challenge within the automotive industry.
We are looking for students who:
- Are pursuing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
- Have an interest in additive manufacturing and product development
- Have basic knowledge of materials science
- Have a structured and analytical way of working
- Enjoy hands-on testing and experimental work
- Can communicate effectively in English
Meritorious:
- Experience with 3D printing technologies
- Knowledge of ESD requirements or electronics manufacturing
- Experience with CAD design tools
