Mercy For Animals aims to end industrial animal agriculture by constructing a just and sustainable food system. We envision a world where animals are respected, protected, and free.

As a leading farmed animal advocacy organization, we know that achieving this goal requires a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment—one that welcomes and sparks new perspectives and innovative ideas. If you are passionate about our mission, driven to make a big impact for animals, and eager to be part of a dedicated team, join us!

We currently seek a vice president of marketing and communications, global, to join our global public engagement team. You will play a high-impact and mission-critical role, leading our global public engagement program and providing strategic support, as needed, to regional public engagement teams. You will be responsible for setting and maintaining our unique global brand identity. You will also set short-term and long-range goals and establish, oversee, and implement campaigns and initiatives to erode global support for factory farming and further the mission of Mercy For Animals.

You will do invaluable work:

  • Manage and lead Mercy For Animals’ global public engagement program
  • Develop and lead multinational and global communications campaigns to erode support for factory farming and increase support for plant-based food systems, grow support for Mercy For Animals, and mobilize people for action
  • Cultivate relationships with external contributors, such as advertising agencies and influencers, to increase Mercy For Animals’ reach and impact
  • Own and oversee Mercy For Animals’ global brand positioning, guiding teams and leadership on how to establish brand differentiation, gain cut-through, build brand awareness, and maintain consistency in message and voice
  • Provide strategic support and guidance to regional public engagement teams, as needed, sharing best practices and advising on goals and strategies, while respecting regional autonomy
  • Stay on top of current trends in communications and topical issues to identify ways Mercy For Animals can tap into trends and increase support for our work
  • Research and implement initiatives to diversify Mercy For Animals’ supporter base, engage underrepresented communities in the animal protection movement, and build support in key regions for Mercy For Animals’ global programs
  • Identify and proactively pursue opportunities to improve processes, tools, metrics, and cross-departmental and cross-regional collaboration to increase our impact
  • Provide strategic input and practical support on communications strategy as Mercy For Animals expands the public engagement program into new regions
  • Work with other Mercy For Animals departments (particularly development, corporate engagement, government affairs and public policy, and organizing) to align global strategies, identify opportunities to support Mercy For Animals’ strategic goals, and amplify our impact for animals
  • Partner with the development team to write grants, manage grant implementation, and meet with major donors to cultivate relationships
  • Serve as a media spokesperson as necessary for Mercy For Animals
  • Perform all other duties assigned by team leader

Your qualifications will take our global public engagement team to the next level:

  • Mid- to high-level experience in marketing, advertising, or brand management (strongly preferred)
  • Mid- to high-level experience in communications, digital marketing, public relations, celebrity relations, or another closely related area (considered)
  • Strong understanding of the farmed animal protection movement and key issues related to factory farming
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (Spanish, Hindi, or Portuguese as a first or second language a major plus)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and persuasively
  • Proven ability to take market or audience insights and turn them into effective strategies to reach target audiences and build support for an issue or a brand
  • Proven creativity and ability to develop compelling communications pieces to gain cut-through or tap into trends
  • Experience leading advertising or communications campaigns in either advocacy or fundraising
  • Experience developing brand identity and leading brand strategy
  • Exceptional leadership and collaboration skills, ideally working with multinational teams
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and relationships
  • Experience writing and managing grants and engaging with major donors (preferred)
  • Ability to travel approximately six times per year for team or coalition meetings and project production
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Mercy For Animals
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice principles and experience applying these in a communications setting

About Your Team Leader

Your team leader, Jesse (he/him), is the senior vice president of programs. Originally from Australia, Jesse joined Mercy For Animals in January 2019 and now lives in Northern California. He oversees our global programs teams. Jesse has over two decades’ experience in advocacy, campaigns, and communications for animals. Before joining Mercy For Animals, he was the director of farmed animal advocacy at Animals Australia, where he ran campaigns, led protests, developed communications strategies, and oversaw volunteer outreach.

Jesse is inspired by strategy and big ideas to have the greatest impact we can for animals. He values a growth mindset, open and authentic communication, emotional intelligence, and a good sense of humor. He believes in empowering the people around him, offering a sounding board and support where useful, but supporting others to own their work and be the experts in their domain. He strives to create a space for team members to bring their whole selves to work and feel comfortable to take risks and innovate.

Jesse loves to travel and learn about cultures. He learned Portuguese while living in Brazil and knows some Spanish. Outside Mercy For Animals, he enjoys outdoor adventures (hiking, biking, snowshoeing) with his wife and their dog, Nina. He is an avid audiobook listener, enjoys juggling, and will gladly play board games with anyone who is willing.
