Job Description

As a Market Principal – Buildings and Structures within our New Zealand business, you will lead local and regional market growth for Buildings and Structures by building trusted client relationships, converting opportunities into profitable work, and providing visible leadership and pastoral care to the local Structures team. This role combines strong technical credibility with a clear focus on business development, client confidence, commercial performance and team culture.

What you’ll do

  • Lead local and regional client relationships across the Buildings and Structures market, with a focus on trusted adviser relationships, repeat work and early identification of opportunities.
  • Maintain strong technical capability in structural engineering, providing senior review, technical direction and practical problem solving on complex building and infrastructure-related structures projects.
  • Drive business development activity including client engagement plans, opportunity shaping, pursuit strategy, proposal leadership, presentations and negotiation of commercially sound scopes and fees.
  • Mentor and support the local Structures team, monitoring team workload and capability and supporting resourcing requirements nationally
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of secured and near-term opportunities, with clear visibility of likely revenue, resourcing needs and commercial risks.
  • Coach engineers in client-facing behaviours, commercial awareness, technical judgement and the practical consulting skills needed to grow the business.
  • Contribute to operational business planning, forecasting and performance reviews to support sustainable local team growth.

Qualifications

Ideally, you will have 15+ years’ experience with demonstrated technical expertise in Buildings and Structures within a consultancy environment in New Zealand. You will have strong local market knowledge and established client relationships in the Buildings and Structures sector. In addition, you will also have:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree or equivalent qualification recognised by a relevant professional engineering body.
  • Chartered professional status.
  • Demonstrated success in business development, including opportunity shaping, proposals, presentations, fee development and conversion of pipeline into secured work within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong commercial judgement, including understanding of scope, fee, risk, margin, BHR and project performance drivers.
  • High-quality consulting skills, including clear communication, trusted advice, client confidence and sound professional judgement.
  • Strong industry awareness and a visible market presence within the Buildings and Structures sector.
  • Experience mentoring, supporting and developing technical teams, including engineers at different career stages.
