Job Description

NREL’s water power team has an immediate opening for a full time (40 hours per week) project manager with a technical understanding of renewable energy, marine engineering, environmental science, or a related field.

The Water Power Technology Validation group performs research to advance wave energy, tidal energy, ocean current energy, riverine energy, and ocean thermal gradient energy technologies (i.e., marine energy technologies) - see https://www.nrel.gov/water/marine-energy.html for more information. In this pursuit we work closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), industry partners, and academic institutions. The group’s work involves the development of numerical design, control, and optimization software tools, developing new and innovative methods of capturing marine energy, performing laboratory testing, and supporting open-ocean testing.

The project manager who fills this role will work with NREL researchers and staff, industry partners, and the Department of Energy to plan and execute marine energy R&D projects. The project manager will be responsible for (1) supporting and coordinating laboratory and open-ocean testing of marine energy technologies and (2) coordinating numerical modeling and technology design projects. In this role, the project manager will need to coordinate with NREL’s technical and safety staff, along with marine energy industry partners, community stakeholders, and Department of Energy clients.

The candidate will work on multiple projects simultaneously, and be expected to keep projects on-schedule, within budget constraints, and progressing efficiently through NREL’s administrative processes (e.g., safety, publishing, finance, communications). To be successful in this role, the project manager will need to have a foundational understanding of the technical aspects of the projects, and the project management skills to plan and execute to meet objectives and milestones in collaboration with Principal Investigators and the project team.

This position will require occasional travel to meet project objectives.

Basic QualificationsRelevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience,

Additional Required Qualifications

· A demonstrated ability to manage the technical and logistics aspects of R&D projects.

· Experience with staff resource planning and budget planning and management

· Ability to clearly communicate technical and logistical aspects of project status to NREL and external stakeholders

· Ability to efficiently work with stakeholders with a variety of educational backgrounds and skills

· Efficient with Microsoft Office products and other project management computer systems.

· Ability to plan and facilitate in-person and virtual meetings as needed to achieve project success

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project management certification or demonstrable and verifiable experience
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to technical proposals and reports related to project being managed

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Project Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300
