Ko tōu ake mahi - What you’ll do

 This is a high-impact leadership role at the centre of public-sector governance and stewardship. As Manager, Statutory Appointments, you’ll lead the Ministry’s statutory appointments function and help strengthen the quality, capability and confidence of governance across the health sector. Working with Ministers, the Director-General and senior leaders, you’ll ensure appointments are rigorous, timely and defensible, and support ongoing and long-term health system performance.

You will 

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end delivery of the Ministry’s appointments programme across boards, committees and other statutory roles, including complex or high-profile appointments. 
  • Lift the maturity of the statutory appointments function through strong strategic planning, active portfolio management and a clear focus on quality, timeliness and impact. 
  • Embed disciplined, risk-based appointments practice by ensuring processes, decision points, documentation standards and escalation pathways are consistent, rigorous and aligned with legislative, Cabinet and public-service expectations. 
  • Identify and manage Ministerial and system risks by surfacing emerging governance, capability or reputational risks early, providing clear analysis and options, and addressing systemic risks across the appointments portfolio.
  • Provide quality assurance and proportionate oversight of appointments advice and recommendations, supporting and guiding Principal and Senior Advisers on complex appointments
  • Lead people and develop a high-performing team, strengthening appointments capability and maturity over time, modelling leadership behaviours, and embedding equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations in all appointment’s activity.

  • Advanced knowledge of the Machinery of Government, risk management and what it takes to operate effectively at the political interface. 
  • Proven experience in statutory appointments, governance, Ministerial servicing or public-sector assurance roles. 
  • A highly developed understanding of board capability, governance principles and how appointments can shape stronger system performance. 
  • Proven experience providing high-quality advice and assurance to senior leaders and Ministers on complex or sensitive issues. 
  • Demonstrated experience leading through complexity and change, modelling resilience, adaptability and a strong delivery focus. 
  • Strong influence and relationship-management skills, with the credibility to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
