Job Description
The Washington Post is hiring a Software Development Manager to lead our Content Platform team. This team is responsible for building and maintaining the software and infrastructure of WaPo’s publishing platform. The team’s domain includes both content delivery as well as the backend systems that process content. As manager of this team, you will work closely with other teams within engineering to ensure our content and publishing systems are both robust and reliable. This role requires a manager who can see the big picture while taking ownership of critical applications and tools.

Responsibilities
- Mentor and coach talented backend and devops engineers
- Recruit new engineers and grow a strong team
- Prioritize and delegate tasks effectively
- Manage team members across projects in a fast paced cross functional environment
- Provide foundational support and empower team members to own their work
- Drive forward and provide a vision on engineering goals and technology usage
- Work with stakeholders in engineering, product, and news to prioritize milestones and mitigate business risks
- Manage an on call cycle and ensure constant coverage on critical systems
- Take ownership of stability of our site and publishing systems
- Ensure uptime and resilience on critical systems
- Provide powerful insights by surfacing metrics and performance data to other engineering teams
- Work closely with other engineering teams to understand their needs and provide technical solutions to their cloud infrastructure needs
- Establish and foster a standard of engineer excellence that will maintain stability and quality across all of our systems
- Ensure quality code and cloud practices are being used by the team
Qualifications
It’s okay not to meet 100% of these requirements! We’re primarily looking for people who meet some of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, equivalent field, or equivalent experience.
- 8 years +of experience working as a software engineer
- Experience working with back-end languages Java and Python.
- Proficiency with web frameworks such as Flask and Nodejs.
- Strong experience in command line (Unix & Linux) navigation and revision tracking (Git)
- Experience working with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, and SQS.
- Experience with DevOps technologies such as Docker and Jenkins.
- Hands-on expertise with Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as S3, EC2, ELB, SES, and CloudWatch.
- Varied experience with databases, MongoDB and MySQL preferred.
- Experience writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills for technical and business audiences.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.
The salary range for this position is:
144,600.00 - 241,100.00 USD Annual
The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
