Summary

As Manager, Product Engineering at AeroVironment, you will be managing a team of multi-discipline engineers who are responsible for sustaining engineering activities related to AV product lines and new product introduction activities that support production readiness of new products. The Product Engineering team serves as the technical point of contact for sustaining engineering, including ongoing product support, change initiation, and helping prioritize and execute design and manufacturability improvements. The Manager, Product Engineering will coordinate with other departments, customers, and suppliers, to address engineering related product issues. The Manager, Product Engineering is responsible for coordinating all sustaining engineering activities relating to all Unmanned Aircraft and Tactical Missile System products.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the direction and management of the Product Engineering team, prioritizing work, establishing policies and procedures, etc.
  • Manage a team of multi-disciplined engineers (including Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Component)
  • Recruit staff, establish goals and objectives for employees, support personal development, and evaluate performance of team members.
  • Responsible for team training team in sustaining engineering roles and responsibilities, best practices, departmental procedures and company practices
  • Responsible for coordinating team resources and activities with other departments across sustaining and project support activities
  • Responsible for providing schedule estimates for Product Engineering activities related to sustaining and new product introduction activities
  • Act as a technical point of contact for ongoing product line support, change initiation, and emergent issues related to sustaining products
  • Participate in product design reviews to ensure new product production readiness
  • Support new product introduction teams in addressing issues related to future sustainability of products
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that support the development and sustainment of AV products
  • Work with other business areas to develop inter-departmental processes to meet the business area needs
  • Drive the development of required design changes to resolve manufacturing, cost, maintenance, and operational issues
  • Support obsolescence management of components, material and hardware for all product lines
  • Support in proposal & report writing, review of contracts for production orders, and review of customer price lists & catalogs.
  • Oversight of the design configuration baselines, including product engineering responsibility for the overall configuration design documentation (drawings, BOMs, manufacturing procedures, operational manuals, etc.)
  • Prepare and/or facilitate reviews and discussions for sustaining product line technical, manufacturing, and supplier issues, etc.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • B.S. in relevant Engineering discipline (Aero, Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing) or related work experience + education, advanced degree a plus
  • 7+ years relevant experience in an engineering design environment, including support of products in production
  • 3+ year management or leadership experience
  • Strong understanding of configuration management principles
  • Good understanding of industry design and documentation standards (GD&T, ASME, change management)
  • Experience with engineering support in a production environment
  • Understand requirements for building of production assemblies, including documentation for use on production floor
  • Experience in the manufacturing and fabrication processes for the following types of parts: machined parts, composite parts, plastic injection molded parts, PCBAs/PCBs, wire assemblies, and mechanical assemblies
  • Must have good problem solving and analytical skills, as well as ability to utilize data for decision making
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for team success
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate across technical disciplines and organizations
  • Must be willing work on government contracts, including weapon systems

Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Experience with Trade Compliance practices preferred, not required
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Able to excel in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment, where quick decision making is required

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work in an office and R&D environment (Constant)
  • Required to sit and stand for long periods; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard (Frequent)

The salary range for this role is:

$136,807 - $194,040
