We are looking for a Manager, Operations, Shepard Energy Centre who is responsible for ensuring plans, processes and measures are in place to achieve safe, efficient and reliable operation and maintenance of the facility; to maximize operational effectiveness and ensure compliance with regulatory standards and contractual commitments; to operate the facility in accordance with equipment manufacturer instructions to achieve optimum performance and profitability of the facility and provide support to maintenance and engineering teams.

The Operations Manager assumes the role of Chief Operating Engineer as defined in the Power Engineering regulations and provides leadership and mentoring for the operations team.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for ensuring that Operations personnel have all necessary skills and training needed for completion of their role and that adequate records are maintained to verify training and development is adequate.

  • Accountable for achieving targeted availability, reliability and starting reliability targets

  • Accountable for managing all operational related supplier relationships including, but not limited to, chemical, fuel, ammonia and water treatment suppliers.

  • Accountable for the development of generation, heat rate and performance standard budget for one to five years. 

  • Accountable for Operations cost budget including variable operating costs (chemical and water treatment costs)

  • Accountable for the collection and evaluation of Reliability Availability Maintainability (RAM) data in a consistent and accurate fashion.

  • Accountable for the development of the long term operating budgets, availability forecasts and based on maintenance plans.

  • Accountable for the development, implementation, and use of Operations Procedures required for the safe and reliable operation of equipment as well as emergency response, pressure component Quality Control (QC), environmental controls, waste management and compliance to regulations. 

  • Accountable to ensure direct reports understand and can communicate the corporate HSE policies.

Education Required:

  • A valid First Class Power Engineer certificate (or working towards one)

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field OR technology certificate in an engineering or science discipline from an accredited college or university would be an asset.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years of progressive work experience in power generation within combustion turbine, steam turbine and steam plant auxiliaries operation and maintenance or 10 years commiserate work experience performing related duties in an industrial environment, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience.

  • High level of operations knowledge with skill and experience in high voltage electrical operation, digital control operation, strong mechanical aptitude as well as a good understanding of mathematics and physics.

  • Previously demonstrated experience successfully handling multiple projects simultaneously, in a self-directed manner.

  • Develop and deliver operational plans, budgets, and priorities that support long-term facility performance and business objectives.

  • Apply strong operational and technical knowledge to optimize plant performance, manage risk, and support informed decision-making.

  • Build strong relationships and communicate effectively with employees, leaders, regulators, and business partners to achieve shared goals.

  • Identify complex operational and business challenges, collaborates with stakeholders and technical experts to develop effective solutions, and drives continuous improvement across plant operations and processes.

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid work model that includes Core Days in office (Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays), and more time to focus on Mondays and Fridays, either in the office or at home.  The office workspace is located at ENMAX Place (9500 100 St SE, Calgary, AB).
