Why This Role Matters

The Washington Post is seeking a strategic, creative and collaborative leader to serve as Manager, News Video, helping drive how our journalism reaches audiences across social and video platforms.

This role sits at the center of The Post's off-platform strategy, overseeing a team of social video editors responsible for producing engaging, platform-native journalism for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other emerging platforms. The Manager, News Video will lead editorial strategy, programming and execution, ensuring our video journalism reaches audiences wherever they consume news while upholding The Post's standards for accuracy, creativity and innovation.

The ideal candidate combines editorial judgment, audience expertise and operational excellence with the ability to coach journalists, develop new formats and execute a clear vision for audience growth.

Working closely with the Head of Off-Platform Strategy and leaders across the newsroom, this manager will play a central role in shaping the future of The Post's digital video presence.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

  • You thrive on building teams and helping journalists develop new storytelling skills.
  • You are fascinated by evolving video platforms, audience behavior and emerging formats.
  • You enjoy balancing editorial excellence with audience growth and innovation.
  • You are energized by experimentation, collaboration and continuous learning.

How You'll Support the Mission
  • Lead and develop a team of social video editors, fostering a collaborative culture centered on creativity, journalistic excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Manage daily video programming, staffing and production schedules to ensure the team is positioned to cover major news events and execute long-term priorities.
  • Develop quarterly and annual editorial strategies for news video in partnership with newsroom leadership, establishing clear goals and success metrics.
  • Identify opportunities for original news video coverage and oversee production from concept through publication, including editing and programming responsibilities when needed.
  • Own the editorial strategy and audience growth for The Post's YouTube channels, including news, topical and talent-driven programming.
  • Partner closely with Shows, Originals and other newsroom teams to develop and distribute original video journalism across platforms.
  • Coach editors and producers on platform-specific best practices, storytelling techniques and emerging video formats.
  • Monitor audience engagement and performance across platforms, using data and experimentation to continuously refine strategy and maximize reach.
  • Oversee operational aspects of news video production, including live video workflows, licensing resources and vendor relationships.
  • Collaborate across coverage desks and with Product and Design to identify new opportunities for video innovation and audience engagement.

The Skills and Experience You Bring
  • Significant experience leading digital video production or social video teams at a major news organization or media company.
  • Demonstrated success developing video strategies that grow audiences while maintaining high editorial standards.
  • Deep understanding of YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other video platforms, including programming, audience development and platform best practices.
  • Strong editorial judgment and experience overseeing breaking news as well as longer-form and original video projects.
  • Experience managing and developing journalists or video creators in a collaborative newsroom environment.
  • Ability to interpret audience metrics and translate insights into editorial strategy and production decisions.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and project management skills.
  • A passion for experimentation, innovation and helping shape the future of digital journalism.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet all of the qualifications above. Candidates should upload a résumé to our jobs portal and may include a cover letter to tell us about other skills and experience that you think would be valuable for this role. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Nov. 13 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Department Head, Off-Platform Strategy Keely Diven and Managing Editor Bryan Flaherty.
The salary range for this role is $110,000 - $160,000. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of The Post’s recruiting team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
