Description

The Manager, Coding Operations provides leadership and coding management for the final and initial coding teams. The position is responsible for mentoring Coders in their roles and performing coding education and training. This position also performs coding quality reviews and tracks and trends coding quality and productivity performance to industry and Accuity internal standards. In addition, the Manager, Coding Operations ensures productivity and staffing is maintained in order to meet and sustain Accuity and client goals. The Manager, Coding Operations will oversee client pathways and reporting needs to ensure TAT, productivity and key performance metrics are met. This role will act as the first escalation point for all coding issues identified by internal Accuity teams or the client.

  • Oversee the daily operations of the final and initial coding teams and assigned clients under the Manager's direction
  • Follow coding guidelines and legal requirements to ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Assumes a lead role for innovation, knowledge sharing and leading best practice initiatives.
  • Contributes to the development of strategic direction working with the Sr. Director Coding Operations.
  • Responsible for Inpatient Coder scheduling to ensure metrics for daily productivity and service level agreements are met.
  • Coordinates work assignments of coding staff and adjusts as needed based on schedules and volumes
  • Coordinates and organizes all coding operational functions, including coding audits, staffing, performance evaluations, staff development and training, regulatory compliance, coding policies and procedures, productivity monitoring and coding quality
  • Responsible for ensuring coding team meets and maintains Accuity's standard for coding quality
  • Provides performance management/corrective action for productivity and quality standards for staff not meeting minimum standards.
  • Monitors backlog reports and initiates action plans where necessary based on key performance indicators to alleviate any cases greater than 48 hours in associated work queues.
  • Serves as the subject-matter expert (SME) and resource to internal departments in the areas of coding compliance, coding accuracy and integrity.
  • Develops collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals working with the coding operations team.
  • Assists in the management of new client implementations for MD review to include preparation of workflows, tip sheets, and training in final coding process as assigned.
  • Interviews, hires, and onboards new staff
  • Review of dashboards and interpret performance data for monthly reporting
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare management, Healthcare Administration, Health Information Management, or other related field(s) preferred
  • RHIT certification or CCS required
  • RHIA certification preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year's management experience in a healthcare setting
  • Minimum 7 year's inpatient coding experience
  • Extensive knowledge of revenue cycle management and coding services
  • Operational knowledge of hospital revenue cycle operations
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer technology and preferred knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Highly developed written and verbal skills
  • Leadership skills that demonstrate teamwork, accountability, decision-making, coaching and counseling
  • Ability to facilitate small to large groups of people at various organizational levels for purposes of planning, problem solving, or strategy development
  • Experience with electronic health records and health information systems, CAC, and encoder applications
  • Working knowledge of functional relationships between departments within a healthcare or similar environment
  • Ability to organize and set priorities to ensure that organizational objectives are met in a timely manner
  • Ability to use a PC in a Windows environment, including MS Word
  • Capacity to work independently
