About the Role

The Mainframe Storage Administrator plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient, secure, and reliable operation of the organization's mainframe storage environment. This position is responsible for the end-to-end management of storage devices—including DASD, tape, and virtual storage—while maintaining data integrity, availability, and performance across the enterprise's mainframe systems.

In this role, the administrator will perform daily storage management activities such as SMS routines, DASD pool monitoring, and housekeeping batch jobs, while also providing on-call support as needed. The role requires deep technical expertise in troubleshooting complex storage issues, configuring hardware at the device level, and leading disaster recovery efforts to safeguard business continuity. The Mainframe Storage Administrator will also evaluate and implement new storage technologies to meet evolving business needs, ensuring the organization's mainframe infrastructure remains resilient, scalable, and secure.

This position offers the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively, providing technical leadership during outages and disaster recovery drills, mentoring peers through change review processes, and contributing to the continuous improvement of storage management practices across a complex, multi-location mainframe environment.

Essential Job Functions
  • Implement and enforce security measures to protect sensitive data across mainframe storage systems
  • Perform daily storage management activities, including SMS routines, DASD pool monitoring, housekeeping batch jobs, and on-call support
  • Manage and maintain storage devices, including DASD, tape, and virtual storage
  • Ensure data integrity and availability through regular backups and disaster recovery planning
  • Monitor storage performance and capacity utilization to optimize resource allocation
  • Research, evaluate, and implement new storage solutions to meet evolving business needs
  • Lead and participate in disaster recovery drills, directing team members and validating the effectiveness of the organization's DR plan
  • Create and manage SMS spools to control the allocation and management of storage space
  • Configure tape and DASD hardware devices at the device level to ensure proper operation and integration with the mainframe environment
  • Review and provide feedback on storage changes implemented by the team to ensure quality and adherence to best practices
  • Administer storage software, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Set up and troubleshoot storage replication for tape and DASD to ensure data redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Troubleshoot IBM grid failures and monitor and manage grids across multiple clusters in multiple locations
  • Implement and execute changes independently, demonstrating technical expertise and problem-solving skills
  • Lead storage restoration efforts during outages, coordinating with other teams to ensure timely and efficient recovery
  • Create and maintain up-to-date technical documentation, including procedures, standards, and knowledge base articles
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in mainframe storage administration
  • Strong understanding of mainframe storage technologies and concepts, including DASD, tape, and virtual storage
  • Proficiency in mainframe operating systems (z/OS)
  • Knowledge of storage management software (e.g., SMS, DFSMS)
  • Experience with disaster recovery planning and execution
  • Good knowledge of English
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Other Qualifications
  • Certification in mainframe technologies or storage administration
  • Experience with cloud-based mainframe storage solutions
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., REXX, COBOL)
