Compensation:
  • $150,000 to $200,000 annually
Role Overview:The Machinery Diagnostics Engineer is responsible for diagnosing and resolving complex machinery and electrical asset issues through advanced diagnostic techniques, ensuring optimal performance and reliability with the specific focus of supporting the development of Cutsforth software products. This role involves applying expertise in vibration analysis, kinetics, rotor dynamics, finite element analysis, electrical signature analysis, and time domain waveform analysis to support predictive maintenance, improve operational efficiency, and drive innovation in machinery performance. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality diagnostic solutions and technical documentation, adhering to company standards, safety protocols, and best practices. 
Role Qualification 
  • Successfully pass a background check for cybersecurity access requirements. 
  • Must be able to manage and execute diagnostic projects that impact multiple departments within Cutsforth. 
  • Must coordinate with subject matter experts in mechanical, electrical, and engineering fields. 
  • Must prepare and present diagnostic reports and technical findings with written and graphical content for internal review. 
  • Proficient in diagnostic tools and software (e.g., vibration analyzers, FEA software, signal processing tools, radio frequency interference analysis, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro). 

Strategic Functions  
  • Works under the Software/R&D Team to support the development of a strategic software platform to provide customer with reliable diagnostic tools for their overall asset management needs. 
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements improvements to diagnostic methodologies, tools, and reporting formats, including vibration analysis reports, electrical signature analysis outputs, and finite element analysis models. 
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of diagnostic data repositories to ensure accessibility, usability, and compliance with organizational standards, including: 
    • Diagnostic Data Management Systems 
    • Document Repository (e.g., Zendesk, Paligo) 
    • Other similar systems as assigned. 
 
Essential Functions 
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Research & Development, Operations, and other departments to diagnose machinery issues and maintain technical documentation, including diagnostic reports, manuals, and knowledge base articles. 
  • Utilize unsupervised learning techniques to identify critical features in emerging failure modes.
  • Assist Data Science Team in building and tuning ML models related to machinery health.
  • Deliver Python ML models based on raw wave form and extracted data.
  • Write and develop advanced pattern recognition (APR) tools.
  • Identify and extract features.
  • Create comprehensive diagnostic reports with graphical representations (e.g., frequency spectra, waveforms, FEA models).
  • Utilize structure and maintain diagnostic data repositories using platforms like Databricks.
  • Document recommendations for improvements to diagnostic tools, methodologies, and reporting formats.
  • Write Python modules and scripts implementing diagnostic logic for asset types.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the company’s machinery/electrical asset and systems, analyzing performance data to determine the need for maintenance, repairs, or upgrades in existing equipment. 
  • Confer with internal partners, vendors, or service providers to establish diagnostic specifications, resolve issues, and develop new diagnostic methodologies. 
  • Draft, review, and edit diagnostic reports, initiating and responding to requests for changes and recommending improvements. 
  • Advise and perform modifications to report layouts to effectively present diagnostic data, including graphs, charts, and illustrations. 
  • Develop standard procedures for collecting and analyzing diagnostic data, including vibration, electrical, and kinetic data. 
  • Select or recommend graphics, such as frequency spectra, waveforms, or finite element models, to illustrate diagnostic findings. 
  • Maintain and structure diagnostic data and reports using software platforms (e.g., Zendesk Guide, Paligo), owning the content and structure of diagnostic repositories. 
  • Support predictive maintenance initiatives and projects, partnering with engineering and operations leadership.
 
Education, Experience, and Skills 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • 3-5 years of experience in machinery diagnostics, with a focus on: 
    • Vibration Analysis: Expertise in diagnosing motor rotor bars, bearings, gearboxes, gear mesh, and windings in motors, generators, and transformers. 
    • Kinetics: Strong understanding of torque effects, displacement, and acceleration in machinery. 
    • Rotor Dynamics: Proficiency in analyzing rotor eccentricities and shaft displacement. 
    • Finite Element Analysis: Experience using FEA tools for machinery modeling and analysis. 
    • Electrical Signature Analysis: Skilled in time domain waveform analysis and frequency domain techniques (FFT, Wavelets), with knowledge of current imbalance, harmonics, and related parameters. 
    • Time Domain Waveform Analysis: Expertise in analyzing RMS, peak, crest factor, pattern recognition, and baseline deviations. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and diagnostic software platforms (e.g., vibration analyzers, signal processing tools). 
  • Strong technical writing, mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills with a quality orientation and attention to detail. 
  • Cloud-based computing proficiency. 

Preferred Skills and Experience 
  • Greater than five years of experience in machinery diagnostics, predictive maintenance, or technical reporting. 
  • Engineering or technical background in machinery diagnostics. 
  • Ability to conform diagnostic reports to a style guide. 
  • Experience with Canva, MATLAB, or other data visualization tools. 
  • Certification in vibration analysis (e.g., ISO 18436-2) or related fields is a plus. 
  • Experience with content management systems (e.g., Zendesk, Paligo). 

Other Qualifications:
  • Successfully pass background check for cybersecurity access requirements.

Cybersecurity Role Expectations:
  • Candidate will be responsible for reviewing policies and procedures related to cybersecurity and those relevant to the functions of their role.
  • Candidate is expected to maintain a cybersecure work environment.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to make and receive audio and video conference calls.
  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • Must be able to use hands to type, handle products, parts objects, and tools and to navigate computer keyboard and machine controls.
